Limits of standard bolt a-460 combo

Post  cubicgator on November 26th 2009, 12:48 pm

Just thought i would share info, we ran great at SCSN5 this weekend. We leaned on car harder than ever and found out hard it is to hook up on drag radails with a 533 and alot of boost.
Well i have the standard A 460heads and block not the 18 bolt stuff/ wish i did. We ran 19-22 lbs threw qualifing 7.7-7.60 times at 183-4, At 24 lbs it started to push a little water out over flow, On kill, i don't car i want to win tune , 26lbs the mls head gaskets finaly gave up. So thought i would share, high teens to low 20's on boost with good gaskets and studs is do able, but mid to high 20's save up for the 18 bolt stuff, sure with i did.
On a side note the scat forged crank and rods lived threw all passes, i will tear down and inspect this winter. Think i'm going to put in aluminum rods. The trick flow rockers and stud girdles i got from lem also held up. This is probable the lowest buck 1700-1800 horse engine you can build, i will keep posted oin its servival rate.
Best passes at 3455lbs on radails
60 ft 1.26
330 3.18
1/8 5.01 147 mph
1/4 7.62 184

Boost/head gaskets

Post  blown473 on November 26th 2009, 6:40 pm

My exp. with high boost and head gaskets was the mls can't take multiple passes and hold, I switched to the ICS Titan copper with the seal around the water ports and have never had a failure since. I tried Milodons copper gaskets too, they hold the boost but tend to leak water. So far I haven't found anything better than the ICS product. Sounds like a mighty awesome motor you got, would love to hear it run. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for posting those specs. Truly awesome running machine. You're only running one turbo? What size is it?

Thanks again,
Joe

Well got motor out and topp end off, was pushing a little water by 2/3 from cyl to water port/ and blew a very small spot on cyl 8 straight to water port, very small fire slot from outside ring to port should be very easy repair. All the worring i do about shaft valve train, when i took it apart all valve stems look perfect and all valves still in adjustment. So when lem and the boys say Jamor stud girdles work, beleive them i still am in aww. I hope to take apart bottom end tonight and look at bearings then make my call on what changes to make. I think i want to put all the new valve sping package that came on heads back on, repair them and sell them. they are the 2.35 valve heads. Let you guys know what the bottom looks like soon.
