Alum. Driveshaft
Are any of you guys running an alum. driveshaft? Besides the obvious wt. savings has anyone noticed a better et if they had switched from steel.
Thanks Tore

I've run the aluminum shaft. Can't honestly say it was worth any et though. This was in a high 7 second car for what it's worth, 2350#.

Hard to beat a good 'moly driveshaft. Don't have to be as carefull about hard dings & scratches when handeling that could lead to cracks/stress riser like you do with aluminum & carbon fiber

I've been running one for 4 yrs and I havent had any problems. Going to increase the HP by 350 this year.I will let you know if she holds up. Never noticed any gain over the moly shaft but that shinny utility pole under my car looks professional when I have to take it apart.

My buddy has one in his NMRA Pure Street car he launches at 7,500 rpm and shifts at 8,500 rpm. It's still in one piece it's a 306 ci SBF and has ran 10.68 at 125 mph at 3,100 lbs.

I ran the aluminum shaft all last season, just less rotating mass, which is always a good thing.

Tore, The Maverick I had had a alum. shaft in it for 12+ years w/no problems. LiL Tweety has one but has yet to be tested w/any power at track. We will soon find out huh.

I feel the rotating mass is almost a non issue. It's diameter is so small. The difference in weight is I think the only differenc and that's not a bunch, I am with Dilligas Dave on this one.
It's usually ugly when they fail also.

Re: Alum. Driveshaft
After seeing a carbon fiber shaft break and go through a guys back, I went with the CM shaft with a loop in the front and rear. We ran a small CM driveshaft for a couple years behind a sbf with about 1000hp and now will be making upwards of 1750hp so we went with what looks like a telephone pole. We have to weigh 3300lbs and will be seeing low 1.20 and maybe one-teen sixty foots so we were overly cautious.
I will be installing an aluminum driveshaft in my lower powered car though.

bolts to the front yoke as well........just like the rear.
for the small gains alum would be worth................just do a cm unit and be done with it.

I run aluminum.
I run an aluminum one only because Mark Williams was having a special on them when I went to order a new one. It saved about 7 lbs from my steel one but I really didn't notice any gains.

Re: Alum. Driveshaft
When you're running a class where it is difficult to get the car down to minimum weight, aluminum and carbonfiber driveshafts are the norm. I run in competition eliminator as an A/A and it is virtually impossible to get my car down to the minimum weight (especially given my budget and the fact that my wife is a great cook
) So we run an aluminum shaft. But if your not concerned about the overall weight of your car, buy CM. It'll last forever.
