Mustang II rack-pinion ratio
Is a stock rack ratio the same as a aftermarket one?, paticularly Mus tII and early Pinto? I think 20:1 is what I want for a track monster with 106" wheelbase.

I don't remember what any of the actual "real world" ratios are (or lock to lock turns). But I have a stock Pinto, a Willwood, and a Flaming river out in the shop I can check them later tonight & post the lock to lock results. The ratio gets fudged a given amount anyway depending on how long the steering arms are on the suspension's struts/spindles.

Factory Pinto.....
4-1/8 to 4-1/4 turns lock-to-lock.
One full pinion shaft turn = aprox. 1.262" of rack travel.
Wilwood Pinto....
4.0 turns lock-to-lock.
One full pinion shaft turn = aprox. 1.338" of rack travel.
Flaming River Pinto (shortened main body)....
3.8 turns lock-to-lock.
One full pinion shaft turn = aprox. 1.334" of rack travel.
You really can't use the Flaming River's lock-to-lock number for comparison since it has
been modified to shorten the main body/main rack shaft assembly C/C length.
Also measured a few steering arm lengths for comparison. Measurement is from wheel
center out to tie-rod/rod-end hole........
Mustang II A-arm spindle = aprox. 4-7/8"
'96(ish) Mustang strut/spindle = aprox, 5-1/4" to 5-3/8"
Strange strut/spindle = aprox. 6"

I think the slower ratio (STOCK) sounds good, since my Maverick will be 106 when done. I dont want the steering too fast, considering the WB.
