Spun rods/mains?

Post  dirtbogger on February 9th 2010, 10:18 am

I picked up a d1 block 460 and found when I tore it down it had spun # 1-5 rods and # 1 main. Any thoughts on why it was confined to this area? All the others looked good! Thanks! Sad

Lucky maybe? Clearances? Would have to see them to make any real guess why.

Are they "Spun" or just wiped / scuffed?

They spun, ruined the crank, rods and block in these journals. Threw it on the scrap trailer. I was just going to put it in my future use corner, but have others so I didn't want to mix it up with good parts. I don't know anything about it other than the guy that gave it to me said it started knocking. Just wandered about oil to this area, because it had a lot of crap in the screen, plastic from the timing gears. Would oil starvation target these journals first? Just trying to learn something! Thanks!

Did the rods turn a different color on the journals that spun?

Yes, they got hot!! Sorry I don't have any pics. Guy said he was driving down the interstate and it started knocking! It was still full of oil when I tore it down!

Kinda sounds pretty simple. Probably lots of miles, wornout parts,Low oil pressure from worn out pump, plugged screen. bearings starved for oil,got hot, galded to crank and spun. probably had a idiot light ,no mech. guage and light didn't show low oil pressure. Embarassed

I tore down a mid-70's block to get a crankshaft out of it to have stroked and it had 1 rod on one of the middle throws, that not only had spun a bearing, it had eaten into the crank about a 1/4". The mating side of the journal looked fine. I'm sure all the metal was eating the bearing though. That was one of the oddest things I have seen.
