A460 block

Post  Fordman on September 3rd 2011, 9:34 am

Hello to all, and Thanks for any answers/suggestions in advance.
I am having a 545 built, and i was wondering if the stock main bolts are good enough for around 850hp, or should I go ahead and replace w/ARP main studs?

stock bolt will handle anything you throw at it.... Studs are just a convenience.....

I am of the opinion that the straight-shanked ARP main studs for the 460 are a step backwards from the OEM bolts that come with the A460 blocks....and in most cases even the passenger car blocks (that's what experience tells me).

But will those ARP studs be adequate for your targeted 850 hp when using the A460 block? Probably. but I'd say the factory supplIed fastener hardware is better suited for a LOT more.

The bolts that come with the FRPP A460 have been used in many 1,000+ HP engines and NOS to boot. If a guy feels like he needs something that has ARP on it , use the ARP main bolts........they are of a better design than the studs i.m.o. And the block would not have to be re-linehoned.

Perspective #2: we just subjected an A460 block with factory main bolts to more than 90% nitromethane, making thousands of horsepower, for three solid miles per pass...and did so several times. 850 hp ain't no thang.
