Trans wont turn when tight...

Post  bb429power on September 3rd 2011, 4:09 pm

Well I put the c6 in, the engine would turn over freely but now it wont budge. I loosened the bellhousing bolts up and then it would turn over fine. I did this with the converter tightened and loosened. I don't know what could be causing this. I know that on the old flexplate there was a ring that all the flexplate bolts go through. I put that on, on the trans side of the plate. Is it possibly supposed to go on the engine side? Any help would be greatly appreciated

It almost sounds like you don't have the converter fully "seated" in the trans pump.

When I put the converter on the trans I spun it a bunch and it went in all the way, I'm 100% sure it did... BUT now you got me thinking, maybe it popped out a lil when we lifted the trans and put it up to the engine. I will have to check, probably tomorrow

Justin measure from the face of the bellhousing to the mounting pad on the converter.
You need approx 1 1/8" in between.
If it doesn't measure right, your converter isn't in the pump.

Does your converter have 7/16" studs?
If so did you drill the flexplate holes out?

It looks like your going to pull the trans out.
On a good note, there's lots of room under our trucks Laughing.
You should be able to slide it back a couple inches to get at the converter.

Yep, that's my current plan haha. Well the cab is off so its even easier! So I'll pull it tomorrow and get back with yall on how it works out. I just got under it and tried to measure it and it was about 1 1/8" like you said, but I'm not sure if I measured the right part. Either way, its coming out Laughing

Okay here's what that bolt plate looks like

I have this on the trans side with the bolts pressing against the flexplate. Is that correct? I found another one I have from this truck, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't for the flexplate.

Did you index the converter drain plug so it goes through the little extra hole in the flex plate?

The drain plugs (theres two) match up to the holes on the flexplate, without hitting them.

1) Make sure the distance from the face of the trans to the converter pads is greater than the distance from the back of the block to the flexplate. You always want to be able to "pull" the converter forward into the engine about 3/8" max.

2) Did you make sure the converter seated fully in the back of the crank pilot. I always test fit the converter into the flexplate and pilot. Maybe your converter fell a bit and is not fully seated in the pilot. I've had that happen before...

3) Make sure the converter drain plugs are lined up too.

I checked it on the engine before I filled it with fluid, it fit fine. I can't really see if its seated right now though and it may not be. The drain plugs line up to the holes. And I will have to check the 1st thing you listed.

Should be able to feel 3 distinct steps as the converter seats in the pump
