10.04 AT 134 Soo Close! Poor video included.

Post  512Fairlane on October 20th 2011, 11:30 pm

Went to KC last weekend for the Div. 5 NHRA open. I was hoping to make my first 9 second pass after running a 6.33 at Sikeston. I always run about a tenth slower at KC but I was still optimistic. Car is a little inconsistent in the 60 ft. so I still need to do some chassis tuning. Here is a video of the 10.04. The video is very poor but if you can tell anything from my launch let me know. Rear shocks were set on 4 clicks rebound and 14 clicks compression (from full loose). Front struts are 4 clicks from full loose. Looking for shock tuning advice.

You put some Strange Fox struts on it, correct? On all the Fox chassis' I've fooled with the tighter the better up front... Only the real low power cars like them loose up front.

4.11 gear with 2.72 low gear. I shift at 6600 and it goes thru the lights at 6500. Kids had fun but Mom's reaction was the best. I think she's afraid I'll have to spend more money Very Happy

The launch looked pretty good, a slight right launch twitch, but still pretty good.

It is kinda strange though, the rear shock extension (rebound) vs compression (bump) valving adjustment spread you mentioned (4 vs 14) does sound kinda big/wide if they are both counted starting from "full loose". What brand rear shocks do you have?

When I first read this I was thinking that having the extension so loose, and the compression so tight would make for a more violent separation/initial hit & a more stiff recovery period. But looking at the video, while there is some suspension separation at the initial hit, it's not excessive. But I can't really see what's happening after the initial hit (during the recovery period) because it's kinda hard to see from that angle & distance. Usually I adjust the rear shocks so that the extension is adjusted a little tighter than the compression. This usually makes for a calmer/slower/tighter initial hit vs a looser/smoother recovery period (less sidewall bounce/skip) while also helping the slicks follow the track surface more closely down track.

I forget if it's a ladder bar or 4-link car, but the slight right launch "twitch" could have been from the LB/4-link having it's side-to side preload setting off by just a little, or un-even slick air pressure, or a slick roll-out difference, or crappy track prep/crappy right lane groove.

Sounds like your 1/8 vs 1/4 numbers are pretty close, my chart says 10.00 = 6.37 & 9.90 = 6.30.

I've got Affco rear shocks. On Sat. I tightened the rebound to 6 clicks to soften the hit because on marginal tracks occasionally it will just blast the tires right off the bat. I was considering loosening up the compression to see what happens but the car likes to tail wag a little down track so I don't want it too loose. It has ladder bars. I think around 38" from the rear end to front hole. They are in the bottom hole in the front.
