Victor vs TFS Mafis vs Tunnel Ram

Post  lghting94 on December 8th 2011, 10:10 am

Ok I have been thinking and reading on here and it seems as if the victor intake will peak almost always between 6700 and 6900 on an all out engine unless some serious changes are made to it, the mafia intake seems to be getting a little higher than that but not sure how high it will go and tunnel rams from what I understand are well over 8000 to peak power numbers. Which intake would be best if a person truely wanted a motor to peak at 8000 rpm or higher assuming all matching components were used in the engine. This is for a vehicle that has no class rules to conform to use what you want and run to have fun. What advantages/disadvantages are there with a tunnel ram on stock style heads?

The commercialy avaliable tunnel rams for a std BBF head SUCK, They are all 1960-1970 designs, you aren't going to get power to 8000 from anything thats on the market.

Your only real option is a custom sheet metal intake for anything close to 8000rpm peak.

Secondly, on a standard port head you don't have big enough heads to get any real power at 8000 rpm at the CID most guys are running today. Maybe on a 429-490" something but not on a 572 or 598+

Well I currently have a 495 inch shortblock I was running in my mud truck looking at using it in my 94 lightning to replace the blown up windsor. Also looking at either A429 heads or tfs streets to replace the iron cj's I sold.

The Victor is more like 65-67 and the Mafia is like 6700 and holds to 6900 and the tunnel ram still peaks under 7000 but it makes more torque than the Mafia. This is all on higher hp engines.

If you want power at 8000 rpm forget about either one of those head choices, ported well enough they will spin there but will be flat at what blake has said.

You need to consider some A460 or C460 heads, if your realy looking to make real power at 8000.

A max ported set of P-51's would get there on a 470-490 inch motor with the right intake and cam. And a set of cast SCJ's will too.

Not with ant of the manifolds we have avalable off the shelf, maybe with a Sheet metal TR. I'm not even positive you could do it cutting up a Victor.

KY Jelly dyno #s. 562" P51 & w/mafia intake

951 @ 6,700
951 @ 6,800
951 @ 6,900
951 @ 7,000

I wish it had been pulled higher but I see no indication that the engine was going to lay down @ 7,100 rpm.

Bobby Shrewsberry's 557" P51 w/ported Victor was done @ 6,600 rpm.

OK I am trying to learn something here so I am gonna ask another question. What on the tunnel ram is keeping it from making power higher, runner size, plenum size, shape of runner or plenum? Also Yes I would like to have a-460 heads or c-460 heads but the budget will not allow that right now so I would like to get more from what I already have which is a 495 inch shortblock(restroked factory crank(4.00 inch), 6.800 aluminum GRP rods, custom Ross dome pistons for an iron cj head(14.5 to 1).

KY's motor is still a long way from the OP's 8000rpm....

Everything mentioned plus runner length. The Weiand and Offy TR's just will not work for the 8000 rpm you asking the way they come. By the time you hack and fabricate one to get it close you might as well buy a Fabricated Sheetmetal one that will Get-r done. I've been working on one for the last 10 months and have yet to dyno it, but I will tell you its a PITA and way to expensive to mess with.

Well...no shit...where did I say it was close to 8,000? Rolling Eyes It's just a comparison between the victor and mafia manifolds. The facts are, if the mission was to have KY's engine peak higher than it did it would have had a different cam and headers than it did. The goal was to have a 1/8 mile powerglide package that would be quick in that enviroment.......which it is. Smile
