Great news for Ford 429-460 NHRA/IHRA Super Stock Racers...Edelbrock heads are now legal replacements !

This is great news for the SS racers.
Edelbrock 60697 heads for 460's and 61657 heads are allowed on 429 CJ.
Should help take 60 lbs off the front of those cars. Very Happy

It does appear that NHRA factored all the 429-460 engines with 5 additional h.p tho.
However, I see more advantage than dis-advantage.

Just too bad they are not legal in Stock Eliminator. No

That sounds like good news to me. I was wondering when that would happen.

Yes Charlie, you were the first person I thought about when I read the news.

Now the 1974 460 SS combo looks alot better ! Very Happy
Factored @ 310 hp and with 60 pounds less on the front end, things are looking good.
The exhaust flow on those Edelbrocks probably will be a world of difference than the D3 's.
My only question is that those heads are 75 cc chambers and the D3's are somewhere near 95.
Compression ratio needs to remain the same, so piston selection will be the area of concern.

The bad part is, (in a strange sort of way) is that someone within the next year is going to kill the index with this combo and the 460 will get re-factored higher.

Now, I better call that guy down the road that is selling his Thermoquad.... Laughing

75cc head to replace 92 cc heads .

will have to run the piston down/ larger dish or a combo of both . that was how it was to keep the NHRA spec. they didnt care how you keep it in spec .

now , most likely the same

Still get to port the Edelbrock's ?

Yes, in S/S, as long as you don't exceed NHRA's spec on port volume.

That being the case, I would rather start with the smaller volume Performer heads, than Edelbrocks CJ heads. Where you want volume (and/or cross sectional area) is NOT up at the entry where Edelbrock hogged it out with their CNC'ed CJ port entry.
