Cam selection

Post  SLord82 on December 22nd 2011, 1:58 am

I'm currently in the planning stages of a 547 build for my 71 Torino. I had planned on a solid roller but after all the recent talks about solid flat tappet cams not giving up much if any power to a roller and rollers taking a dump on the street I'm just as lost as ever.

Parts I have collected so far;
forged h-beam 4.5 stroker kit
Ported P51s from C. Evans (~420cfm @ .600)
matching 4500 Victor
110mm SV-1
Comp rockers 1.7 ratio (oops) or HS 1.73 ratio

I also have the 460 I built a few years ago as a starting point. It has a Comp XR280 (or something like that, 242 and 248 @ .050 and .650 and .667 lift, from memory) solid roller with comp lifters. I hadn't planned on reusing the cam because I think its too small, nor do I plan on reusing the lifters because of longevity issues I rather not take a chance on. These lifters were from ~2003-2004 before all the fancy direct oiling for street motors.

I want the motor to be super reliable for mostly street duty and the occasional thrash while still maximizing these great heads. I would like 750hp and 700lb-ft with a table flat curve, which seems reasonable to me with these heads but maybe I'm way off base.

Plan on running pump 93. Stick car with 3.50s out back.

Soooooo, with all that being said should I spend the extra money on a roller or will a healthy flat get me there?

Thoughts on this flat tappet?

What about this roller?

Sorry for the epay links, but I haven't seen that voodoo flat tappet listed anywhere else, even on Lunati's own site.

Custom grind?

Thoughts?

Call Lem up, on my first 521 build he pretty much nailed it for me when be built a solid flat tappet. You won't loose much between a solid roller and a well built solid cam. He can hook you, he sure as hell did for me. cheers

The trick is a custom cam is better than a off the self cam and it will cost you the same. scratch
