460 Front Dress - PS/Alt/AC

Post  512Fairlane on February 6th 2012, 10:30 pm

OK all of my big blocks have been race motors so far so I never needed a PS pump or AC compressor. We are thinking of putting a 460 in my wife's "new" 57 Fairlane street car. What should we use for PS pump, Alternator and AC brackets. I'd prefer late model stuff or at least something from the late 80's and up. There isn't a lot of length between the firewall and radiator in these cars so they need to be short. Thanks.

use the one off of the later 460s that everyone say is a serpinten belt or how ever you say it, and for more room just set it back about 10"
she will still like it Smile

I am in the same boat with my 56. I would like to use the Billet Specialties one but it costs billet money.

Not sure on the stock stuff but I bet non of them are short. At one time there was a guy that built some adapters to use the stock 5.0l accessories but I can't seem to find them anymore. I was sure it was on BigblockFox but I looked and don't see it. Maybe someone else will chime in.

I will probably just build something myself.

Here it is from the other site.

Check page 3 about modifying the waterpump.

Check out this company

Jason, I found this company on the 57fordsforever website. They seem to be fairly reasonable but it still adds up. They are v-belts and it looks like they have brackets for everything except AC.

I have seen that company before. They make pulleys for the Ford Racing short street rod pump that Ford no longer makes. I have had several aluminum V-pulley setups from Ford Racing and L&L products and never cared for them. The L&L were for all the accessories and they always slipped. I think there was too much load for the amount of grip they had. The Ford ones only ran an alternator so there was no issues.

My approach may be different because I am using a motor plate setup. Like you, I wanted AC, PS, alt. I mounted the AC and alt as seen below:

Then, I used an electric power steering pump to get the PS part. You can mount the pump anywhere as long as you can run power to it and plumb it to the steering box.

Have a good day!

Hmm. Where do you find an electric power steering pump?

I was thinking of making something along those lines Micheal. I looked at the March units last time I was at summit and all they are is an aluminum plate bolted to the water pump. It's just shiny so it cost $2000 more. Lol

I too am interested in hearing about the electric power steering pump.

I think most of the new model cars and some small SUV's are using electric pumps.

The electric power steering pump I have is from a Fiero. Like other above said, they're available in other, newer cars too. I bought a factory NOS off Ebay for a good price. I done a lot of research on these and found a lot of off road guys running them. I like that it's one less belt driven accessory connected to the front of my engine. My build will have the electric power steering mounted in the bed of the truck. I'll use stainless steel lines to plumb it to the steering box. Also, it means that the P/S will work even when the engine is off (but key is on).

Have a good day!
