Late model 1966 Mustang advice Empty Late model 1966 Mustang advice

Post  knrclark May 6th 2012, 6:45 pm

I'm thinking about putting a late model (87-93) 5.0 into a 66' coupe just for a daily driver. has anyone done it and do have any advice for me?

Thanks

We're doing that with a 65 galaxie. You need to decide on a few things going in. Will it be fuel injected or carbed. We are using a carb. The accessory drive needs to be addressed. Do you want to use a V-belt or serpentine set-up. The balancer pulleys are different late model to old. We got lucky and are using a 5.0 out of an 89 or 90 lincoln. It has two multi-rib modern style belts and the water pump is a standard rotation water pump. 5.0's in mustangs use a single belt and are reverse rotation. The Lincoln motor, which is a roller block (not all are, I swapped in a Mustang GT cam), allowed me to use an early style timing chain cover with provision for mechanical fuel pump. Otherwise, you'd need an electric pump for the carb, which I don't want on this car.

Google the 5.0 swap to early mustang and your head will swim. It's a great thing, but there are obstacles.

Good Luck Very Happy

I swapped an 88 5.0 into a 66 Fairlane years ago. I would just get a complete everything if you can. I ran external walbro pump and used the factory fuel line as a return line and plumbed it into the filler neck. Everything is typical sbf as far as front sump oil pan. You will need to drill out a hole in the timing cover for the dipstick as well. I modified the stock efi harness. There is a lot of info out there and i would recommend doing it.

Below is a pic of my uncles 66 that he did.

Late model 1966 Mustang advice Empty Thanks

Post  knrclark May 6th 2012, 11:24 pm

Wow! Thanks guys. I had no idea it would be that involved. My theory was to buy a wreck and transplant everything. I kind of wanted fuel injection and an electric pump.

My car has the old cloth covered wiring and a generator. I wanted to swap wiring and go AC...with A/C to boot. Also, long term, disc brakes and maybe some upgraded suspension parts.

I'll keep everyone posted and please do not hesitate to comment further.

Check your Vin # Kerry, the generator's were replaced by Alt's in 65. Looks to have a 66 grill though.

Late model 1966 Mustang advice Empty OK

Hey Rick, it's funny you mention that. There is a lot of weird stuff on this car. I was talking to the guy who owns that Mustang ranch a while back and he had similar concerns. The VIN# says it is a 66. My Dad ordered this car from a dealer. I suspect he just got some goodies when he was not supposed to. One of the reasons I decided to Mod the thing and not go back all original is these funny issues and it is a 66 coupe and nothing special except it belonged to my Dad since it was born. If I spend 10,000 on it it would still only be worth about 3500 at best, so, she gets upgraded and driven around and not a creampuff.
