Newbie question on manifolds Empty Newbie question on manifolds

Post  Kermit460 June 22nd 2013, 6:16 pm

O.K. guys, heres my dumb newbie question.....I have a 73 Mach 1 w/ a 76 460 with D3ve heads,it has crites long tubes terribly low to the ground.Limited header choices,I know FPA makes a great set for 800 bucks. My question is ,would the 71 429 mustang exhaust manifolds fit the 460 heads if I were lucky enough to find a set?I know Lane Carey gets wicked performance from his car. Thanks in advance.Smile

if its a stock 429  they use the same gaskets as the 460

Manifold bolt pattern will be the same, stock  cobra jet port size is 1.50 wide, 2.40 high, stock 460 port, 1.25 wide, 2.08 high.

Thanks ,I know a guy on the mustang site that may have a set of used FPA's still available.I was just curious about the 71 429cj mustang ones cause they looked like they may have a pretty good flow without the heat & clearance issues.

They are still marginal compared to a good header.

I used some cj manifolds on some c8 heads (same exhaust ports as d3's) and the cj manifolds much higher port looks like it is too tall and would not seal to the non cj head but I gave it a try anyway and lo and behold it DID seal! There is only about 1/16 th of an inch of contact between the two but it does work. I thought I just got lucky but I have talked to a few other guys who did the same thing and it worked for them as well.

police interceptor manifolds might be an option too they look very similar to the mustang CJ manifold and a lot cheaper too.
