572 questions

Post  pistol25 on January 19th 2014, 9:26 pm

Hi, guys new to this forum. I've always ran lots of small block fords, but am now building a 70 Torino cobra, I bought a 572 short block off a friend at a very good price but now I'm trying to work everything else out. I would like to reuse the cj heads off the car so I keep it looking original I know this will hurt me power wise but for a street car I think I can live with it. my question is what cam should I use? flat tappet? roller? solid roller?etc? and if using the cj heads what about pushrods? stock cj length?

Next question Ive been reading on cometic head gaskets, if I can some 80 thos. thick I can get compression down under 11 to 1 so it can be halfway street able. anybody have any experience with these on street cars?

the block and heads surface prep is critical when using the cometic or any multi layered gasket.some will argue that it isn't but that's my real world experience other wise they are good gaskets.

Did you do a compression Calculation, or you estimating a ball park figure with the 11/1 compression number? Do you know the dish CC number of the pistons?

No. Cleaning matters but "surface prep" in this context refers to the machining finish (roughness) of the block deck.

I haven't done any calculations i'm going by what the guy at the machine shop told me, he is the one who put the bottom end together. He also, redid the cj heads for me. He told me if I don't put 80 thos. head gaskets on it the compression will be over 11 to 1 and recommended the cometic

with the surface prep both are fresh from the shop, besides a good cleaning, is there anything else I should be looking for?

"Fresh from the shop" needs to be the correct "freshness" of sorts..  Read direct from the gasket's mouth:  http://www.cometic.com/technical.aspx
