Need advice with a new project. 1964 Galaxie with a very tired 351 2v C & good shifting fmx trans. Needing some direction at this point, to rebuild the 351 c or go with a 351w ?
Looking to build motor for a honest 300-325 hp with good driving street manners. Can this be done with the 351 2v C heads and a mild hyd cam shaft , 9.5 flat tops, intake , 4B carb , & no headers? I'm taking so mild I can use factory FMX convertor? I know what ya'll thinking a FMX? Trans shifts good with no issues . If I hand the means to build a motor and replace trans I would. Not going to throw money at the FMX so I can't run very much cam. If I had an AOD in it already I'd buy a convertor and run a little more camshaft. The car has power disc brakes and AC . Just wondering if I could get a little pep out of what I have or do I need to change the whole set up? Thanks Kyle

I don't think it would be any problem. I have a new set of .030  made in USA Speed Pro flat tops with rings, but unfortinately they are at a relatives house and I can't get to them for a while. Also have a set of closed chamber 4V heads and a matching Ford 4V intake with a Holley flange there to. The 2V heads you have and your intake would be better for what you describe. I would put some flat top pistons in it and a cam around 210- 220 degree's@ .050, and .500-.550 lift range, max. Use a wider lobe separation angle like 110-114, on a dual pattern, and you should get pretty good vacuum, and help the exhaust flow with manifolds. You can also get a custom cam ground from some of the guy's on this forum, for your application for not much more than an off the shelf grind. They grind cams for pulling trucks with a vacuum rule to get max HP, so they should be able to pick a little bit more than the shelf grinds, in both the vacuum and the no header deal, as alot of the decent factory cams are designed for headers.

Meh, they can be made to hold up OK behind a Cleveland depending on the power numbers & the traction. My old beat up heavy Ranchero had a FMX in it with a B&M transpack way back in the late '80's, held up great for years & years of abuse.

300+ will be easy with that build. The FMX will do fine. I had a 4300# '72 Torino Sport with a 2V 351C. Custom cam, headers, Edelbrock dual plane with different carbs(everything from a 600-750. Quickest with the 750 but not the best carb for the car). Engine was a stock longblock with 8.5:1 compression. Ran 8.90's to 9.0's in the 1/8 in the mid 70's. Rear gear was a 3.70 with a locker. Surprised a lot of people back in the 80's with that car. FMX had a B&M transpak with a GER 3000 stall converter which was way wrong for that car. 9.5:1 compression with a good intake, carb and exhaust will really wake that engine up. Get a cam that will work good to 5500 rpm and I think you will he pleasantly surprised. I would probably use a 650-670 carb. with vacuum secondaries. Dual plane intake. Get your timing right with a good timing set and the dizzy modded with Scotty's method here for the BBF. You'll have a blast with the car.

Good luck

You have the tired 351C stuff so no need to switch unless a bargain is in the loom. 300 hp was attained in 70-71 with a quench head and a flat top, the heads you have can get it done easily with a 2V intake / 4BBL carb like the "Holley Street Dominator" 4BBL flange and 2BBL ports. The 2-bolt block will hold up to much more than 300, as will the FMX (delivered on lots of factory Ford muscle). Keep the cam reasonable and retain the vacuum for the brakes/driveability, a shift kit and an adjustable modulator will help the trans, a new converter would help too(street type). No headers will limit it a bit but the exhaust manifolds are capable of 400+ as long as they are not cracked (check them). Do not listen to your SBC friends on timing advice the 351c will take more and like it. Junk the factory points distributor if it has one and replace it with a Duraspark, and a 429/460 Duraspark dist or an aftermarket. New rings, bearings, HV oil pump/drive, and check tolerances on everything prior to assembly, you can go hydraulic cam, or wait and use a budget crane type conversion rocker setup (pedestal)when the budget allows and run a solid, I would not bother machining 2bbl to adjustable pedestals.
