Post  GT300TD February 22nd 2016, 10:35 am

I have M/T aluminum valve covers and 1/2" spacers. I want to bond them together permanently to avoid using 2 sets of gaskets. Have looked on the "net" and everything is so expensive, plus I want to be sure that anything I buy will withstand the heat. Besides two sets of gaskets are 'fugly' Sad .

I've not had the best luck with JB weld , but I think it might have been in the preparation. I'll probably use it, thanks.

There is a 2 part system called "5 minute epoxy". Devcon is the manufacturer. Good stuff!

If you bond it to the cover having well cleaned surfaces with "the right stuff" being sure to allow it a full week to dry, you will have no issues. Cut off the excess after it dries with a razor blade.

I guess you have considered different "tall" valve covers? Idea

Okay, sand w/60 grit paper and clean with brake fluid. Find the right stuff, JB Weld or the epoxy or the mighty putty (I'll check them out). Clamp and let cure for 1 week.
Thanks a lot guys Smile .

Something else to consider. I used to paint a lot of Harley engine parts and because the aluminum was so porous the paint would start to blister after they got hot from the oil trapped in the castings. To solve the problem we would clean them then put them in the oven for about an hour at 450 degrees, let them cool and clean them with brake clean. Problem solved

Picked up some JB Weld Marine Weld, it's the only JBW that lists Aluminum in the Applications.
