The 611 CID project was not what the customer wanted. He needs 1500HP to be competitive, although his brothers 1200HP 532CID engine lost once in the outlaw class last year pulling against 650CID engines. Ken Wiebe, Untangled. It has a stick of mine.

I spoke with Lem, Wes (Pro Header), and Carrol Carter and general consensus was that a 600 to 650CID engine with wedge heads makes 1250 to 1350HP. Well I get an email after I sent the customer an email stating that Bob Meyers (dyno owner) son stated to Scott that in all the years of engine dynoing, that the 611 was the only engine that he ever felt throughout the floor of the shop. Customers competitor has 1800HP 650CID. How hell do guys get away with this bull$hit stories?

It's not like drag racing where if you know the weight of the vehicle, the et, and the mph to figure hp and torque, I've seen it in mud racing where a builder in Indiana said an engine made xxx number horse but didn't perform that way. Granted there is the inconsistent racing surface and being to stay in the fastest line but...........

You know I never thought about it that way. Your right though, the 1/4 dyno or even better yet a jet boat will tell the tale. A tight track will somewhat say, but dyno queens choke all the time. The reference to IN engine builder, I'm told one guy has a 200HP correction factor on his dyno no matter the engine size.

The little(very) I know about truck pulling is that there are so many variables from finding the proper line that can have more or less moisture in the ground to moving weight from the back of the truck to the front, the height of the hitch, how fast you can get to full throttle. You only get a couple runs too, its not like drag racing where you can test and tune.

The gear choice will have the final say on a decent track.all the guys I know keep the gear choices top secret Laughing on a good track the wrong gear choice will choke that 1500hp sob no matter who built it. Cool

Just recently, (like last month), a customer bought a used 598 Chevrolet engine for his drag race car. It had 1090 horsepower and he wanted to know if I could match that if building him a fresh engine with pretty much the same conventional type, (not top of the line stuff), parts.
He would then use his present engine as a spare.

His car is a dragster at 2,150 pounds it went a best of 7.88 ET  in the quarter mile; 4.72 at the 1/8th mile.
I said sure because I know that ET ain't near what should be run with 1090 horsepower in that car.

He is taking that engine out of the car and to the dyno, (an honest dyno), this weekend because I told him the engine I would build will easily be better than what he now has, which is nowhere near 1090 hoesepower, and he is going to prove me wrong.

I feel pretty confident.

I hate to use the word lying but, if that original dyno is a just little happy and the the engine owner embellishes the number a little more then the seller tacks on to the number a bit again ... it can become a lot higher than what it actually is.

This guy is a pretty straightforward person so, I think something like that must have happened here.
