intake swap?? Empty intake swap??

I want to swap the intake form my 289 to my fuel injection 302. I read that there the same. Will the distributor also work? Does anyone see any problems with what I want to do?

For a factory efi you need the Ford 5.0l TFI distributor but make sure and run the correct dist gear for your camshaft. The intake will bolt on no problem.

A 289 intake will have 4 extra bolt holes, be sure to plug them as they go into water.

Me and a friend did this before with a efi 5.0 HO switched to carb but we had some help but the distributor was switched to the old stile to plug into the 80 f150. My plan was to switch everything over the intake, carb, distributor, coil and ignition system and just run a hot wire from a switch to the coil and the red on the ignition box.

A 289 intake manifold and a 302 intake manifold are different.

I'm not arguing that I here you there that I will have to plug the holes just wondering if I can use the distributor from the 289 with the intake or if I have to go find a distributor from a carb 302?

That depends upon what the camshaft material is; the 289 points distributor will fit but, working correctly is an entirely different matter.  The drive gear will need to be changed if it has a correct O.E.M. camshaft for the F.I. engine.

Steel Ford Motor Company cams need steel or bronze distributor gears and cast iron cams need cast iron distributor gears.

The heads"can" have different water passages to the intake manifold . Late model heads are much larger in that area.

I was going to see if I can use the distributor gear off the efi on the 289 distributor. If the water ports are different you think I can just a die grinder and match them up? I'll see if there different and get intake gaskets for the efi 302 and trace them out? I'm not looking for any real performance here just want it to run again so I can get my firewood out it's just a yard truck and I'm trying to get by on this stuff because it's just laying around won't cost me anything.

You need a steel gear for the 85 ONLY .302 HO roller engine OR and aftermarket steel gear for the .467 (289) shaft dia.
The water ports in the late model heads might not be covered by the early intake and you may have to use an 83-85 stock Ford 5.0 aluminum intake ( 4barrel carb)

You don't need to grind anything ... just plug the extra bolt holes in the 289 manifold.  Use the EARLY 351W gaskets.

I bolted a 1965 COBRA intake onto a 302 out of a 1997 Explorer with GTP heads with no problems. We did this when we put the 302 into my sons 85 Ranger, we didn't plug any holes it bolted right up and it ran like a raped ape. It was the S2MS-9424-A that came on the 65-66 Shelby GT350 Mustangs.

So i took the intake off the 289 and it seems like the gaskets were blocking off 2 water ports on each side. The gaskets are the same as the 302 early 80s. I'm thinking maybe it was a 302 intake all along it a edelbrock and the 302 gaskets match right up

I've been hunting for pictures of 289 and 302 heads trying to tell what I have here but cant find anything... What should I look for to tell if it's a 289 or 302???

Disregard those last two posts sometimes I ask stupid questions lol. The intakes are the same except for the water ports are a little smaller on the carb intake. Same amount of bolt holes thinking maybe it was a 302. Would like to know how to tell the difference if there is something easy to check. Will post how I make out when I try to get it going thanks everyone

The 289 and early 351W intake and cylinder heads have 8 hold down bolts per side and the water crosover ports are upside-down "L" shaped.
The later manifolds and heads do away with 2 of the hold-down bolts per side and have 6.

I believe that Boss 302's have 8 bolts, also.

This intake has 6 per side it's a aluminum edelbrock performer 289 but everything seamed the same except water ports are a little smaller than the efi 302 heads. It's on now everything good so far going to try to change over all the wiring and distributor tomorrow night.

If I were to leave all the efi wiring harness just hanging off to the side could I just leave the original distributor in???
