e85 fuel anyone using it....

Post  wayney on September 25th 2016, 10:00 pm

hey, is anyone on here using e85 ? looking for real life pros and cons.
I have a p51 head 521 i am thinking of either adding twin turbos or nitrous to. if i do nitrous i will just run race gas when i spray it. turbos i was thinking of doing e85 and not running an intercooler . so some questions are....

will the e85 have a problem with natural aluminum parts of the fuel system(cell and fuel rails )?

moisture in the oil is a concern ?

fuel shelf life in the tank, if the car sits for a month with the same fuel in the tank ? i don't mind draining it for the winter.

10-15 lbs of boost with no intercooler? will IAT get too high.

thanks, wayne

e85 is awesome. i have not had any corrosion issues with either of my projects

10 psi and under iat wont really matter as long as turbo size is close.

moisture in oil is a mechanical methanol thing and a non issue with e85.

so no problem with aluminum fuel cell or fuel rails. 10 psi without intercooler should be good with gas or e85?

good to hear about the moisture.

A lot of people are having great luck with it. I personally hate the stuff and just run methanol or race gas. I know how to tune it but the problem is I can't be everywhere so when you go to the track unless your buddies/helpers know e85 they aren't much help with the tuning. It is not the same as methanol or gas.

10-15 lbs of boost is fine. I would run it efi and buy good quality fuel.

For nitrous, I would never use e85 but I'm normally spraying a pretty big shot. Just changed a car tuned by a pretty darn good e85 tuner over to race gas and picked up about 150 at the tire with the same nitrous jets. Obviously that doesn't happen every time but this guy was hardcore e85 until he kept hurting the motor every time out. Switched him to NO2 fuel and bam! No hurt parts. Pretty sure it was just the inconsistency in the fuel he was buying making it hard to tune for the other guy.

thanks,

it does have efi . i was just thinking e85 to avoid the packaging issues of the intercooler.
i would definitely not use e85 with the nitrous. i have experience with nitrous but turbos would be all new.
mild street/ strip mostly play at the track. 521 target hp 1200-1400 . thinking maybee 2 s369 BW for smaller packaging.

you'd be fine then. for a bb with twin bw turbos I'd still use the s400 series. you'll max out the exhaust pretty quickly with s300.

e85 is the only fuel I care to use.

Limit of boost will have variables such as motor combo and turbo efficiences , as with any fuel.

Ive never had a problem running nitrous with e85. Ive only ventured up to 200hp.
AGain, some engine combos will be picky about different fuels.

Ive gone quicker with e85 than I ever did with gasoline.
