Doug this just uses the aluminum cradle from a crown vic and it practically bolts right into the F150 frame (with a bit of work). It is not a welded subframe like you typically have seen in the past.

Am I missing something here? In the 5th photo from the top I see where the frame behind the cab is angled cut, shorten, and spliced back together.

The frame halves overlap 6"+ inches. I didn't feel the need for additional gusseting.

Sorry Doug, my mistake. I thought you were asking about the front suspension..

It's alive and my neighbors probably hate me because we have no exhaust on it! Haha.

Tach works, oil pressure is good, no runs no drips no errors!!

Saturday was a long day! Exhaust is done. Probably the easiest exhaust system I have ever built. 2-1/2" pipe and it terminates under the bed.

Getting closer! Sunday was spent routing wiring under the hood and trying to figure out an air filter/box solution. Still need to bleed the brakes, radiator hoses, trans cooler lines, build a shifter mount and install the shifter.

I am currently scheming how I can steal this truck from him..... Smile

Couple of more pics. I am really really happy with the ride height and that the front/rear wheel backspace is very even. Kinda by accident since we are using a dentside 9" under the back.

We got sooooooo close to driving it this weekend. Well, Saturday, because we went skiing on Sunday. Haha Bleeding the brakes turned out to be a little more troublesome than expected so we did not get them bled. Shifter is in, air intake is in, it starts, runs and acts as it should. It had a tick when we first cranked it up but that went away after it ran a little while. Now that everything is in, we really need to get after engine cleaning!

Shifter mount and intake tube turned out fantastic.

Bleeding the brakes was a total pain in the butt. We jacked with it most of the day on Saturday. Finally got a hard pedal. Messed with the shifter adjustment for a while to get it right. Checked the toe and it was toe'd in 3/16". Adjusted it a smooch and it was good to go.

Driving impression: This thing is a ball. The CV front end is really really nice. Steers good, rides good, stops good just an overall massive win. Motor runs good, very torquey and will vaporize a tire from a stop pretty easily. Steering wheel is a little off center, but not by much. Nothing leaked, broke or caught fire so we are feeling really good about it right now.

We calibrated the speedometer yesterday. It works perfect. I am sooooooo happy we were able to use the front ABS sensor to drive it. Very nice product and it is super duper user friendly.

Trans is still an issue. We can use manual 1 and 2, but I don't think we have any (or very limited) automatic functions in D. We have just been driving around in 1 & 2 powerglide style because with 3.25's and 30" tires, it'll run 45 mph in 2nd pretty easy. haha

Awesome thread! Its sooo cool seeing projects come together,  especially Father/Son stuff.

Im looking into doing the Crown Vic swap in my 1956 F-100. The fact that its practically a bolt in affair makes it much more appealing than cutting and grafting a stub.

I was kind of expecting a huge smokey burn-out on his way to school. I'm guessing that was a few miles down the road, huh Jake?

Great job, BOTH of you... very inspiring  cheers

Hey thanks! We have had a great time with it so far. The plan is for us to drive it on Rocky Mountain Race Week in July.

Everything seems to working great except the E4OD trans. We are waiting on a speedometer correction module to correct our speed signal from 39460 pulses per mile down to an ECM-recognizable 8000 ppm. Apparently it is taking the slow boat from Australia. hopefully once that is in place it will shift on it's own properly.

The Aussie speedo corrector was a total flop. It did modify the signal, but when set on 80% correction, it would only output 50%.

On to plan B.

I did more research into just exactly what type of signal the EEC-IV and stock PSOM require. The PSOM take a VR signal and outputs a square wave to the EEC-IV. I am thinking I might be able to use the stock PSOM in about the same manner as the speedo corrector, except that I 100% KNOW it's output signal is compatible with the EEC-IV computer. The kicker is that while the PSOM is programmable, the lower limit for correction factors is 5.0.

The conversion factor is calculated: ConvConst = TireRevsperMile x ToneRingTeeth / 8000

With our front tire size and 50 tooth tone wheel, we really need 4.93. That works out to a difference of something like 10 tire rotations in a mile. Certainly ballpark to make this crazy thing realize it is moving. I hope. haha

Last night, I wired up the stock 1996 speedo (PSOM) and started the reprogram process. Fail. It has already been reprogrammed 6 times. Dangit!!

I decided to drive it anyway just to see if it would shift. Compared to the GPS speedo on my phone, it was right at 50% too slow. Despite that issue, it did shift by itself in D, but the shifts were soft and mushy because the ECM was only thinking I was driving half as fast as I really was.

We unplugged the trans (back to 2nd and 4th) and went for a drive to recalibrate the Autometer speedo. After the 2 mile calibration, it was right at 4000ppm.

I really expected the stock speedo to be a huge pain, but it turned out to be super easy. Now we just need to find a new stock speedo that still has a few reprograms left in it.

Great success and a meh!!!

Popped the new speedo in, went through the reprogram sequence, (which meant I had to click the select button 520 times to go from 10.20 down to 5.00) and boom, the trans shifts by itself and all that good stuff!!!! It's not performance calibrated so the shifts are pretty soft and comfy, but it does them at the proper time and downshifts when needed. Yeeeeessss!!!?

Now for the meh. When reprogramming, the number the speedo displays is the number of reprograms REMAINING, not the number of times it has been reprogrammed. So I didn't need to buy another one after all..... Oopsie. Live and learn!!

We have over 500 miles on the truck so far.  Jake drives it everyday and it is running like a top.  Our Punisher VB arrives this week, so we can turn this slushbox E4OD into a much snappier gear changer.

Due to rain, we did some work on it this weekend in our newly expanded shop at work.  Doesn't look half bad wet.  lol

This project has transitioned from a DD to a 'fun' truck.  We ran across a ridiculously clean 1995 Cherokee for Jake to DD.  So we can play with the truck a little more and not worry about the DD aspect so much.  That being said, this thing runs and drives so nice I find myself wanting to drive it just for fun.

Very cool build. Great job it looks really good. Have you checked the mpg with it? Should be decent in a lighter truck with nice intake and exhaust.

I haven't checked it with a calculator, but I think it's getting ~11-12 in town.

The weather totally sucked here so on Saturday I finally took time to swap in the Punisher valvebody. I took my time and surprisingly didn't make much of a mess. When I got the pan off, I noticed that 2 nuts were missing and all the other nuts were loose. Yikes. All the bolts were tight, but NONE of the nuts were! The nuts are 10mm and the bolts are 8mm so I guess the rebuilder just forgot to torque them down. The two missing nuts were stuck to the magnet in the pan. There was a little material stuck to the magnet, but it wasn't bad.

The VB swap itself was super easy. Unbolt the old one and bolt the new one in it's place. I put it all back together and it is dripping from one of the pan bolts that holds the shifter cable on, of all the odd places. The bolt holes in the gasket were pretty big so I guess the gasket is a little bit shifted and allowing fluid to leak around the bolt.

Just got back from a drive. Shifts are waaaaaay better. They used to be crazy slow at WOT. They are now firm without slamming. Truthfully, I'd like them to be even harder, but this seems good for now.

I was all set to take the Mustang to the track Friday night. The Mustang had a different plan. Cranked it up and it started having weird ecm resets. So, we put it back in the shop and took the truck to the track.

On the way to the track, Judd (Jake had plans and could not go) and I took guesses at what it would run.

Judd: 16.0
Me: 16.50

I told him if it ran in the 15's I'd be super happy.  DA was around 5000'.

We got there and spotted a Gen1 Ford Lightning making passes. 16.1's. I told Judd my goal for the night was to beat that guy. We got teched in (had to add a water bottle as a coolant overflow) and made my way to the lanes. First pass, I brake torqued it just a hair and it boiled the rear tire off the line. Ran 16.59. I knew I could do better so after a quick check for leaks, I went back up. This time I decided to let the trans shift for itself. That was a mistake. lol. It shifts on mph so it shifted at about 3500 rpm each time. Ok, back to manually shifting!

I decided to just swing back in the lanes and lo and behold there was my great white whale! The Gen1 Lightning was sitting there in the lanes so I slid right up into the empty space next to him. It was on! I did a small burnout and staged. Tree comes down, and I drill him. Truck hooks and I manually shift at 4500 rpm (fuel cut is 4800, ask me how I know haha). I never look over, but I beat him. A 16.01 to a 16.12. Yeeeeeeeeessssss!!!!! Goal met!

But wow, a 16.01! My mouth was dripping with saliva for that elusive 15 second slip! I went back to the pits and celebrated with everyone for a few minutes and then went back up.

I did a little longer burnout this time, hit my shift points and was rewarded with a 15.87! Yeeeeeeeesssss x2!!!

We are having fun now! Goal #2 met! Whoo hoo!!

Made another pass after that and slammed the fuel cut in 1st gear. That's like hitting the brakes lol. Cuts at 4800 and then comes back on at 4300. Meh.

Last pass of the night was next to a Hemi powered Dodge Ram. Oh yeah, let's whoop up on a Hemi truck! Cha-Ching! I win! Hit the Dixie horn just after the finish line just to celebrate. The guys at the time slip booth loved it. Haha.

Overall, a fantastic night making passes with friends and getting this thing sorta figured out. It ain't fast, but 15.80's ain't bad for a dead stock motor (we haven't even messed with the timing) with open 3.25's and 30" tall street tires. I was shifting to 3rd just before the traps. With a limited slip and some better gears and tires, this thing might run pretty decently!

Edit:. Months after this, I discovered that the truck had the incorrect TFI module. Someone installed a black module (Computer Controlled Dwell module) which does not work properly in place of a gray module.  The truck literally had base timing (10 degrees) all the time.  No advance at all. Unfortunately I discovered it well after the efi engine was removed from the truck.

Thinking seriously about putting the 552 from the Mustang in this and putting a 302 in the Mustang for my boys to tinker with. I dig this truck!
