carb size? Empty carb size?

Post  bbfstanger November 16th 2016, 7:43 pm

Just looking for opinions on carb size.
I have a 585ci Ahead drag race deal, fairly lightweight mustang with a glide.
How big of a carb is big enough or too big?
I was thinkin of a qf 1450 or holley equivalent, what about a 1600cfm domi?
The other option im kickng around is a tunnel ram and 2 1150's? but I'm prob gonna stick with a single.

I've got a 588" A head with a 1250 Pro Systems that runs pretty darn good. Been 5.teens at 134. It ran good on a 618" combination as well.

The carb should be matched to the engine's airflow needs. The problem is, most folks cannot afford to buy multiple carbs in different sizes to find out which one is the one best suited for their engine!!
I bet a 1600 CFM carb would be right at home on a 580 inch motor.
I bet it could use two carbs even better!!
Of course, having a proper airflow / vacuum gauge to tell you whats going on, would be ideal. If for example you are seeing over a .5" of vacuum at WOT at peak RPM's, you should increase the CFM by 100 for every additional .5" of observed vacuum, because excessive vacuum = restriction.
