Better rings for more spray 521ci

Post  6jeff6 on January 9th 2017, 10:16 am

I have a 521 with scj heads, 10-1 compression, a block, mechanical roller cam m-6250-a514, forged pistons, forged h-beam rods, cast nodular iron crank, with ring gap 24 top 22 bottom. What do I need to buy and gap rings for more spray? Right now I'm limited to a 250 shot. I am also considering getting heads worked but depends on how much rings cost. Head work will be 2.25 valves and such or just cleaned for better flow. Any help would be great

Personally ... I would use a hard-coated steel top ring.

I would call Total Seal. For that amount of spray you don't need anything exotic but let the experts tell you. I deal with Ed Law but there are plenty of sharp guys there who will help direct you. As far as gap, they'll tell you once you decide on a ring package.

It's roush/Yates motor and I called the tech line directly an they said I could spray up to 250 shot. I sprayed a 200 shot about 25 times and a 250 shot once (broke C4 forward drum)

With increased ring end gap ( to prevent butting) a moly ring is marginal beyond the 250-300 shot. Steel rings ( and increased gap) are required for numbers over 300. I do not recommend the "hardened manganese" rings as they hurt cylinder walls FAR more than the more durable steel rings like the Total Seal AP AND Hastings PVD offerings.

Thank you for all the help. I hope to get to a 500 shot but will be happy with 250 shot for a little while. I'm thinking the 500 would need a couple stages to come in as I already can't spray 200 off the line so I just did 2nd an 3rd.

Total Seal has spacers to partially fill a ring groove to use a thinner ring; radial gas ported spacers, too.

Why did it switch to such a thin ring?
