Distributor Gear Selection Empty Distributor Gear Selection

Post  SLord82 January 31st 2017, 11:00 am

I have a lunati flat tappet going in a mild build and was wondering what the recommended distributor gear is? Can I just use a stock duraspark gear? I have distributor from a 96 truck and the gear looks to be in good shape. Would I be ok to use that gear on a duraspark that I plan on using? The duraspark I have has a bronze gear that I used with a solid roller.

Thanks

The factory gear should be fine on the flat tappet I have not ever used a bronze gear on any of my flat tappet cams and never had a problem with the steel gear. I do use the bronze gear on my solid roller cam.

ALL factory O.E.M. camshafts in 429/460 engines are flat tappet camshafts so, your gear should work fine.

Distributor Gear Selection Empty Dizzy gears do wear

You probably be fine if you set the depth right with the old gear. Old hole is most likely worthless do to various changes. I would since its a new cam for about 20 bucks buy a a new MSD cast gear with the Melonised coating for peice of mind. 4.00 inches from base of dist. where it sets in block to bottom of flat machined spot of gear is what I shoot for.. Thats assuming u have the endplay to specs. and measure with it pushed together. Mine is at 4.02 but has like only .008 end play. I set it up in bare bock and its perfect.
