Trailer tires Empty Trailer tires

Post  dave d March 28th 2017, 8:04 am

Hi everyone going to be putting on new tires on my enclosed trailer just wondering what brand of tire everyone is using. Currently they are st 225x75x15. D range. Trailer is old and heavy at 5800 unloaded. Definitely thinking about stepping up to e range. Thoughts--Thanks Dave

My opinion... Step up to size 16" wheels with E-load range tires.

It seems that everyone who wants the most trouble free towing uses the Michelin towing tires.

No need to poll 15" tires that are all junk on a trailer. Just step up to the plate and put load range E 16".

If you decide on the 16'' wheels and tires make sure you have enough room so they don't rub when you load the trailer. Back when I worked at Pace American Trailers we change the axle spacing and wheel boxes when we put the 16'' wheels on for clearance.

Make sure to stay away from the Chinese tires and Bias ply stuff.

Radials only and Domestic manufacture if you want them to last

Are Michelin tires considered to be "domestic" ...?

Another option that we chose to go with was changing from dedicated trailer tires to LT truck tires on our gooseneck equipment trailers. We grew tired of having and/or seeing our fairly new, low mileage trailer tires having tread separation issues, shifting radial belts or blow outs(with no obvious reason-we took 2 tires back to the tire shop and the owner couldn't find a puncture in the tire's casing that would cause such damage). These were with using quality trailer tires, not junk, we have too much invested in and on the trailers. It has been 4 years since the change and have had to replace only 1 of 16 tires due to a road debris caused flat(piece of angle iron) on an interstate. The thing about trailer tires is the cost and warranty, In our experience they cost just as much as a quality E-rated LT tire, but as soon as you leave the tire shop any warranty ends, our tire guy will fix/replace our LT tires due to a road hazard warranty that was included in the purchase. Not saying every shop will do this, but it sure feels better in the wallet. Good luck with whatever tire is chosen.

Just my .02

It's nice to be able to step up to 16".  I thought about it last time I put tires on my 28' enclosed.

I didn't because most enclosed trailers built with 15" wheels use a 6 lug hub.  Most of the 6 lug nice aluminum trailer wheels out there are meant for boat trailers and such.  They are not weight rated fro a 10K lb loaded trailer.   There are a few, but they are spendy.   Just about all nice 16" trailer wheels that can handle the weight are 8 lug.  Fitment also  becomes an issue when you try to find 16" 6 lug in a 16X7 16X6 wheel.  8" wide wheels won't fit without the tire rubbing.

I've had good luck with the E rated (10 ply) 15" trailer tires.   Towmax is what I have now.  Decent tire, even though it's imported.

For the last 6 years you could not get a a USA made 15" E rated trailer tire.  None.  The last mfg shut down.  There is now an option though.  Starting 2 months ago, Goodyear now has a USA made 15" E rated.  tire.  I'll give them when I need tires again prob a year from now.  3 years on any ST trailer tires is about it safely even if the tread looks good.

I bought a brand new 26' Pace trailer in 1994 with the 5000lb. axels and 15" wheels. Knock on wood I've never had a blow out. Had a few flats from running over something but never a blow out. I've always run D rated tires but never been too particular about the brand. I may have just been lucky but I'll take it.

x10000000.

I use my 32' trailer once a year if that and almost every time I have a blow out. I am on my 3rd set of 15" tires. I am tired of buying 6 new tires every couple years so I just quit using my trailer. They are all junk and all made in China no matter what people claim. I have a triple axle so larger tires are a no go without moving axles or swapping to a tandem axle. $20k Haulmark trailer and they designed it around POS 15" tires tires. F'n junk.

I just looked today and all the 28 to 32 foot "tag along" enclosed car trailers in the lot which have 15" wheels are shod with Michelin Defender LTX "Light Truck Crossover" tires on them; either 225/75 or 235/75.  45 psi is the rating on the sidewall; we do exceed that all the time.

On the way home I stopped at Discount Tire to get a price on those and it was $162.00 each.

My 24 ft had 5 lug 15 inch tires on it. I would blow 2 or 3 every year going to the bash. I changed wheels and tires to 16 inch and changed the offset to allow a wider tire plus taller.

Haven't had a blow out since.

I'd go to 16's but do not have fender clearance on one trailer.
And the other trailer uses a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern.  Hard to find that pattern in a 16 in. wheel
