429 Fly Wheel

Hi all,
The family friend that i'm buying the 62 F100 off of has another project he is putting together with the money i'm buying the truck with. The truck should be done in the next 2-3 months and then he will move onto this project. He isn't a big internet guy, so i'm trying to help him out.

We are looking for a 429 Fly Wheel in good condition shipping to zip code 53190. It's a stock 429 that was refreshed.

I don't know a ton about the 429-460 motor or hooking it up to a manual transmission. Am I asking the right question in my initial post about a fly wheel for a stock 429 or is it simply no one has one?

Might have to call an aftermarket clutch company for the flywheel and clutch, should be able to use a 460 or 400 "truck" bellhousing.

what bell are you going to use?

I think a 390/FE Bbf flywheel is the same.

You can use a FE 390 manual trans flywheel on a 429 as no 429's were ever externally balanced. You can also used the 390 flywheel on 460's from 1968 to 1978 only, in 1979 to end of production the 460 was externally balanced and requires a different flywheel and the "Hatchet Weight" crank spacer. As for bells you also have several choices, factory 429-460 bells, 351M/400 bells or aftermarket Lakewood (which are no longer in production but available used) or Quicktime which is still in production but very pricey. The easiest to find are the 351M/400 bells which came in trucks and Bronco's and fit nice and have to regular toploader bolt pattern which is also the same pattern as the granny low truck NP435 transmission. The 351M/400 bell also alows the use of the 12 inch truck clutch and of course the normal 11inch or 10.5 inch. Make sure you use the block plate or at least test fit the clutch to make sure it does not hit the inside ribs some bells are cast with (All do not have them) you can spot grind if needed, we have only seen this using Ford "Long " style pressure plates, with a diaphram unit everything clears easily. Hope this info helps.

390 wheel (184 tooth) will work if you use a 351m or 400 bell, or a scatter shelid (lakewood)

factory 429 flywheels are (176 tooth) ,and then you need factory bell,or again a lakwood< which is why it has 2 starter patterns

same starter for all any of them
