Jomar oil Filters Empty Jomar oil Filters

Had a solid flat tappet camshaft lobe failure; debris went through engine and needless to say I am now in the market for probably a 4.3 crank (was std. stroke). Was using FL1HP filter; would a Jomar w/o internal bypass possibly have saved my parts?

Pulled #3 main cap & had some embedded debris in bearing and crank scoring. I know the oil pump would have ingested junk either way, I'm thinking a no by pass filter would have possibly saved the bearings/crank ??

Funny you should ask...

We just wiped a cam in the Dirt Late Model motor, 4 lobes to be exact..
We run the Jomar filter....

When we took it off, the filter weighed a TON !!!
It killed the oil pump, with all the trash going through it..
BUT, there was NO evidence that the junk went thru the bearings...

Draw your own conclusions...

"Yea but, that JOMAR filter costs a significant amount more than most".  That's the line I get from most of the customers when I try to sell them a Jomar filter.

When actually, it can be inexpensive at twice the price.

Actually @ 17.00 or whatever they are on Jomar's website that is pretty inexpensive considering the job they do; wish I had known about them sooner. The damage was done a little over two years ago and just dug into it this past week. Was planning on replacing the stock rods & pistons if crank was OK; just going to go w/a stroker set up now.
Randy I own 4 PSD diesel trucks, I don't think filters are a place to skimp & try to save a few bucks.

Since you have that many PSD trucks, you probably have a few of their filters on hand. I use the WIX 51734 PSD truck filter on my Mustang using a CV remote filter mount. The WIX has 21 micron filter media with no bypass and flows 28-30 GPM.

I run a 57007r that cost around $30 each which is about 50% higher than a Jomar and has a bypass.

Some people will pay more than $19 for a filter.

I have customers that still do not know that ANY filter with a bypass does exactly that - it BYPASSES said filter when it fills with debris and sends it through the engine. Filters without bypass will show a reduction in oil pressure as they plug up and can save a lot of money and aggravation by simply seeing the loss of pressure, or setting off a light.

Ill bet the filter is not to blame, engine was prob ran too long with the junk running thru it, sometimes they just dont get shut down in time

Ill bet the filter is not to blame, engine was prob ran too long with the junk running thru it, sometimes they just dont get shut down in time

I'm not blaming the filter at all, just that a non by pass filter would have probably prevented further damage.
I think a few things probably contributed to lobe failure, all of them I take responsibility for:

The last oil change I did I used Mobil 1 synthetic, I don't believe it has proper additives for a flat tappet cam but I may be wrong.
There was a lot of idle time moving the car in and out of my shop depending on what was taking place at work, not the best for a flat tappet cam and not getting up to temp w/alky injection.
When it at 1st started to run bad I thought it was a nozzle issue, cleaned them & then richened up the barrel valve trying to get it to run right which milked up the oil some adding to the issue.

If a guy caught the issue quick the 9025 Jomar filter very well could have saved it. I like the Jomar product a lot...I use them and sell them.

BUT

When the 9025 [or other] gets plugged with cam and lifter metal the engine gets little or no oil and the crankshaft and bearings are toast.

Do you have a part number for the mount that fits the 7.3 filter? I may have to remote mount my filter with my new headers and this could be an upgrade of sorts as it holds close to double the oil a FL1A filter will hold.

LOL, I really should remember to proof read before I post, I went back and corrected it, but it is CV Products not CP! The part number is CV748 with 1-1/2" x 16 thread, and I would also recommend using their AN fittings, they are O ringed, are short threaded, and have a radius inlet. Be forewarned though, it is pricey but one of the best machined filter mounts I have ever seen.

Our bearings didn't look "bad" considering, But you could tell they had seen "reduced" oil flow.... Shocked
