Post  BigBlockTBird May 13th 2017, 10:40 am

I'm going to look at a 460/c6 today that a guy is taking out of his drag car. He says the motor is mostly stock, but we'll see what that means when I get out there. Point being, I'm looking to stuff this beast in a 80s or 90s Thunderbird and go racing in the Super Street class, and I could use some help designing the engine as this is my first 460 I've played with. I will post back this afternoon with many more details about the motor and trans, but for now I know it has a Holley 750 DP, a set of headers to fit a first gen Mustang, some kind of electronic ignition, besides that it is assumed stock

So the engine is rebuilt with an unconfirmed forged bottom end, it has c8ve heads, an Edelbrock Performer 460 intake, Holley 750 double pumper, some junk headers that used to be real nice before they were blown out, no name HEI distributor, and a leaky oil pan. He wants 750 for that and the c6 behind it

Sounds like a good canidate for a build.

I'd squeeze him too let him keep the carb and intake and you keep $300.

They aren't what you want for a 600 hp build anyway.

Tell him you want to see that "Forged Bottom End" and then squeeze him. Wink

This guy doesn't want any Ford bits, he's going turbo LS, so I may be able to shirk the carb but that's it. But if I do have to take the whole package I imagine I would be able to unload that intake, carb, and distributor to a guy building a decent pickup.
I sincerely doubt he's going to drop the pan off to prove a forged bottom or not. He didn't seem interested in doing anything with the motor at all besides ripping it out and getting it gone and replacing it with some chevy garb lol
Since those headers are toast and it leaks, I'm thinking I'll offer 500 bucks and see where it goes, sound about right?

You could look at it this way, the Holley and Performer Intake are worth 2-300 alone so 500 would be a pretty good deal.

That sounds good to me. 2-300 dollar motor with a free c6 too. I'll buy it.

As for the build plan, how do I go about making enough power to hustle a tbird down the track for 10.90s?

My Ranger at 3265# with a 460 stock bottom end except for the cheap speed pro Pistons with dove c heads home ported with a victor intake 1050 carb had Randy make me a custom cam with a C6 4500 stall 4.86 gears turning 6500rpm letting off halfway between the 1/8 & 1/4 cross the 1/4 at 10.88 as soon as it would hit the rev limit I would let off.

What your looking for isn't a big deal to build, what kind of budget? What work are you capable of doing yourself?

I would like to stay under 10k, and I can do everything myself short of the machinework

No problem at all with the budget and goals

Use your block

Get a 521 kit with a cast crank, hbeam rod, flattop piston rotating assembly, Scat is a good choice.

Get a set of quality aftermarket aluminum heads, TFS streets, Kaase P51s Ford SCJ's, Eddy RPM are some good choices. Make sure the piston valve reliefs match your head selection

Get a custom ground solid roller (don't need anything gigantic for your goal) and lifters

4500 Victor intake and a 1050 Dominator

Good ignition and oiling system and Balance of valve train

600+ HP like falling off a Log.

What machining and oiling mods need to get done?? I know FEs best out of the Ford family and their oiling system needs big time help if you're going to crank power out of it, I imagine the 460 is similar?

The 460 oiling isn't as lame as the FE. Use a good oil pan with windage tray...nothing major for your goals. Among Dave's mentioned cylinder head choices there's enough power in any of them to run your number easily...and last a LONG time. Like he said....600hp like falling off a log.
