best solid lifter cam for a boss 545? Empty best solid lifter cam for a boss 545?

Post  Bosskk1786 May 1st 2017, 8:45 pm

hello everybody! looking for a little help and knowledge. Looking to have a new solid lifter cam ground for my boss 429.
here are the specs:
4.39X 4.5
hull hemi ex pro stock heads i bought from rich wilhelm at the columbus swap meet
2.28 intake
1.90 exh
malhle pistons 10:1 compression
kaase 4500 intake
prosystems sv1 1200 cfm 110mm
its an original boss 429 mustang that my dad ordered in 1969 and ive been driving since 1994. i was gonna swap in a roller cam but i would rather put that money towards a gear vendors overdrive.
car weighs about 3700 with me in it. i drive it on the street but planning on running it at the strip every couple weeks this summer. would love to crack into the 9's but mid to low 10's is probably more realistic.
car has 4.30 gears, competition engineering slide a links. i got mickey thompson drag radials 325/50/15 and havent had much luck getting them to hook.
current cam : lunati part # 30340743
257 int 265ex @.050
lift is .660 with my nascar rockers
110 lobe seperation
106 centerline
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated..... thanks in advance!..... joe

With a single carb those type heads with that size engine usually don't require a longer exhaust lobe but, what you have certainly WILL work with a street type closed exhaust system.

thanks for the input Randy. I was thinking of swapping to a comp cams 306S while my heads are off. Would that be better suited to my application and intended use?

Are you looking for more power? You already mentioned being traction limited.
4 speed car? auto?

Sounds like a fun ride as it is. Have you had it out to the 1/4 mile yet?

Cheers

it's a 4 speed. i want to get the best suited combo i can get for what i want to do. this summer is going to be dedicated to getting the power to the ground. havent had it to the track yet just a couple 1/8th mile runs at the local airstrip its not a timed event. both of my runs are on youtube.... it is a blast to drive and gets tons of attention

best solid lifter cam for a boss 545? Empty boss 429 mustang

Post  hbstang May 3rd 2017, 11:15 pm

i am sure you have heard this already, but a decently restored 69 boss 429 mustangs have been bringing north of $250,000 at most of the big auctions lately.even a blue 70 brought $210k on ebay recently.just saying.
i have kk1859,its not restored, just a driver, but its not safe driving anywhere here in southern cal.LOL
i think your engine now should get it in the 10s,its not really lacking anything except a little compression.cal tracs, suspension set up,frame connectors, etc  and an overdrive will just add more weight.would like to see pictures of it.
by the way is your car registered on the boss forum?dan.

Yes it should be on the registry. Signed up back in the 90's I do believe. I'm well aware of the value. I've turned down many offers. My dad bought it brand new and gave it to me when I was 22. I got it running in 1993 after it had sat for 23 years... There is no amount of money that could buy it cause its part of me I guess you could say. I'm 40 now and have been tinkering with it since I was about 10.

best solid lifter cam for a boss 545? Empty Which registry?

Post  XEngr May 5th 2017, 5:30 pm

If you signed up in a Boss 429 registry back in the 90's it was some guy from Washington state who turned into his personal buying/selling list. The real list was re-started by a couple of guys who post on the Boss 302 registry. That's where you want to be.

Yes Im pretty sure last year I got signed up on the registry. Steve strange is the guy up in Washington. He pretty much made it impossible for a normal working guy to restore his car back to stock... I had some bent exhaust valves back in the 90's when I freshened up the engine he wanted 100 per valve for used ones. Lucky Dick serdinak had some for 30 dollars a piece

I was talking to the owner of this Holley before it got stupid.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/132125439162?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

He pulled it with almost 30 bids and it was up to $4,000.00 as someone said they would trade him some Hemi carbs. for his Cuda.

It's not even an OEM and does not even have a Ford Number on it, Crazy.

best solid lifter cam for a boss 545? Empty boss forum

Post  hbstang May 5th 2017, 7:37 pm

actually i was refering to the boss forum.they did a registry book a while back, thats not related to steve strange.also when hundreds of people registerd their car with him back in the last 30 years,he was going to publish a registry book but never did.he instead decided to sell the information that we all gave for free to prospective boss car buyers.he did publish a really nice book years ago, that has a lot of good info in it.he must have information on over 800 cars that have been located, dead or alive.thats my guess.
i bought parts from dick serdinack as well.he had 4 boss 429 mustangs, and one of them he ran in NHRA stock class.he said it ran 10.70s,at 3800 lbs.i know it was not a max effort by any means,so you will have no problem getting to the mid 10s.once you start getting traction thats when things will start breaking.here is a link to the forum.dan.

Yes I'm next to positive I sighed up on the forum. Im always try to keep a lookout of there for pistons and rocker arms as I want to build another engine for my drag car project I just bought.... I talked to dick at the Ford Carlisle show a couple times and on the phone. he said he dynod his engine at 580 hp. He is suck a wealth of knowledge when it comes to boss 9's. I want my car to bring some attention on the strip cause I still always hear people knocking them on how they perform.

Back around 1987/88 I seen a wrecked Boss 429 Mustang sitting in a auto body shop lot in Rialto, Calif. It had been T-boned on the driver side and was pretty much destroyed, it was missing the engine, but the trans was still in it, and I distinctly remember those recessed shock towers.
No, I didn't get the VIN number or the serial number way back then, but it was a 69 model, and it was the Maroon Red color.
Also one of my old employers had a Boss 429 Mustang that was a bucket!! It needed full restoration, as it was just a basket case.
I don't know what ever happened to it after he died. He owned "Dougans Engine Rebuilding" in Riverside, Ca., now its called "Dougans Racing Engines", as my old boss Terry Dougan lost his battle with cancer but the new owner of the shop decided to keep the Dougans name because it is very well established.

I haven't talked to Dick it probably 10 years. I tried calling his shop multiple times over the last 2 years to get o- rings but his # is disconnected. I heard through the grapevine that he had a stroke recently.

Yep I'm using original heads. I have 2 good sets in full hemi and 2 sets in semi hemi that need some welding. The heads I am using are converted to regular head gasket. My other set are all o-ring.

The WW rockers are for kaase heads ONLY. The rocker arms stands are cast into the head. Td machine and jesel are the only manufacturersat the moment. There is word of someone else working on some rockers also and I'm patiently waiting for those!

I swear I remember reading somewhere that WW made OE-type rockers, guess that is no more anyway.
