A96 block cylinder length Empty A96 block cylinder length

Post  fastbarry June 21st 2017, 11:53 pm

i am looking to put a big inch aluminum A-head motor together and may have found an A96 block with 4.600" bores and a 10.3" deck to use.  i would like to use a 4.75" crank but i come up with different opinions on using them in standard deck height blocks.  do these blocks have the same trouble supporting the piston at the bottom of the stroke as the iron blocks when using a 4.75" arm or are they any better or worse?

i have no experience with big ford alum blocks and have never actually had my hands on one.  i do not know how the cyl length compares to any of the iron stuff

this motor is being built to go in a sandrail to replace a turboed chevy LS.    My 2 main goals are broad strong torque curve (where 4.75" > 4.5" ) and reliability  (where 4.5" > 4.75").

i already have the top end package, motorsport a460 heads and motorsport single 4 intake.

i would appreciate any insight and advice you guys might have.

thank you,
barry

Are you sure a 4.750 will fit in the block ??

I have an A91 and a 4.750 won't fit without ALOT of grinding inside the crankcase....
So we went with a 4.625 and still had to grind some clearance..

No I am not sure it will fit. I don't have a block or crank in my possession yet.

The 4.750" will go in. Lots of grinding to be done.

If you buy from C and C Motorsports, they can supply you with a block and whole shortblock assembly that has been cnc'd for clearance. They can even assemble it all for you, just throw your top end on it and complete it.
Its more money, yes, but its also less hassle and it speeds up the project!!

That's because Carrol's shop is a speed shop that sells parts, has a machine shop in the basement, and a nice dyno room. Cool
