Transmission Question for Mustang II Empty Transmission Question for Mustang II

Post  dr's wife racing June 28th 2017, 11:29 am

I'm building a set up for my Cobra II. Yes I know it is a pinto. I have a 351 Windsor based engine. I have a Garrett 76 mm blow thru turbo set up. This is to be a street set up. It will be drive for fun car. not a daily. It will see the track when ever I want to. Goal is to be a drive in car. Not a trailer queen.
Question is what trans. I am pretty open to any option with in reason. stick or auto. If you have ever worked on these cars they are narrow frame and trans tunnel area. It will have a down pipe up front so exhaust is not going to be in the way. Any thoughts ??

A C4 with the small factory mustang 2 bell, it going to be all the automatic that will fit without surgery.

If your into rowing your own boat, a toploader will fit with a scattershield for the cable operated peddle, swapped one years ago.

Will that bell fit on a regular c4. I have 2 of the small bell c4's that came in them. The have tiny input shafts. Not sure bout the internals.
I have also thought about a t5.
Will the small c4 or any c4 for that matter hold up. My question about the t5 is the same.
I know neither is optimal but I know my choices are limited.
The car is factory auto but I have a set of clutch pedales as well

If you don't use a race converter the c4 will live. All that slipping makes lots of heat! On the other hand a t5 or a stronger overdrive stick would be better for a driver,IMO. I wouldn't let some firewall modification stop me and I bet you won't either. Cool

With a BFH you can make a SB C6 fit, but it is easier to cut a piece for ease of installation/removal if you want to go that route, only minor not major surgery to the firewall.

As long as the C4 has the later input shaft , 0.839" diameter you are good to go Smile

Never heard that before about torque converters though Question These days I find even 4000 converters I use run cool and drive nice , but will flash up in RPM when required

You'd have to check, back then in the cars I had with autos I just ran the factory C4 (didn't know any better

The c4 will live I have two customers using them one runs in the 7s ( and hopefully high 6s when we get the blue bottle sorted out ) the other mustang II runs 5.90s 1/8 mile the 5.90 car gets freshened up trans and engine at the same time every two years. One runs a mild 302 with nos the other is a 408 Cleveland with nos .
Anything other than a manual transmission 4speed , 5 speed , or a c4 with small bell housing and transmission body the tunnel has to be modified. That is from my personnel experiences.

An AOD will fit in a Pinto so it should fit in a MII.... I would think..  Where are you going to fit a turbo and plumbing is what I would like to know.

71 Pinto, 347/AOD.

I've always ran a auto in mine. Which is the factory c4 that came in mine. It is going to be a hood full to get it in there. I don't worry about some cutting but I don't want to butcher it.
We may try some test fitting this weekend.
If it doesn't go the way I want my next choice is is the 66 GTA.

I will have to put it on the pass side. Will have to remove part of the inner fender. Intercooler should fit behind bumper. I am worried that there may not room for the turbo to sit behind the head light. That will determine if the thing will fit. If not I will put it in the GTA.

One could probably get a AOD or C6 I have not tried . I know that the starter is a night mare with the small belll housing and long tube headers with a 302 c4 or factory 4 speed . They make headers for a 351w in a pinto that are 1 3/4 long tube for mustang II. I have not found a set for the mustang II .The front end set up is simaler but there are some differences between the two.

That is one thing that I think I have going my way. My turbo headers come to front. I will have a single down pipe wit exit at front fender. I won't have to deal with headers or exhaust piping back at the firewall and trans tunnel where it gets so cramped for space.

I've had mine since 94 , Its a 76 Cobra 2 , My best ever was a 10.80 at 121 mph with a 1.37 60' on the rear tires with the old junkyard 86 5.0 footbraking it with a 125 shot of nitrous. Its a Performance Automatic comp c4 without brake , and Ultimate 4500 nitrous converter , I use a sfi flexplate for them and they are 143 tooth for the mustang 2 , I have a lot of street miles on it too and its always seemed fine so far. Weight with me in it is 3025.

I've always wanted to put a 351w based engine in it , I have a 396 stroker kit i bought from Mike Stevens a few years back and i'd like to get a set of the Mahle pistons for the P38 heads and use them on it. I need a oil pan and headers for the 351w tho , I bet i'd be floored on the difference compared to the 302's I've always had in there.

Post  dr's wife racing July 3rd 2017, 9:52 am

I may have a front sump pan. I did a test fit yesterday. And there is more cutting than I am willing to do. I would have to cut innt the actual frame rail to clear both the headers and turbo.
I still may do a 351 based engine but the turbo set up is out on this one. The basic measurements say it won't fit the fairlane with butchering it either.
I'm going to look at some other options today. I know it will fit in a fox or sn 95 but I want to do something different. I'm going to look at the 62 tri power car I had a while back. The guy I sold it is a car trader sold it to a guy who's son took it for a ride and now it has a knock. He is upset with his son and says he will sale it cheap. I know it will fit there. Lol
