BBF crank support on Roots setup Empty BBF crank support on Roots setup

Post  66prostreetfairlane April 7th 2015, 12:31 am

Just thought I would provide some info and pictures that might help others. In running the boss 429 intake, roots 8-71 blower, and 2 v groove pulley's on the crank ... it really puts it out there. There were some concerns voiced that unsupported it could put a lot of stress on the #1 journal and crank when in higher boost. In talking with a few members on here, I was able to find out a crank support was either a custom deal or making something work. I am running a custom front plate from Keith that is lower on the motor than your off the shelf front plates. That being said I was able to order all the parts to a BBC crank support for a blower and my Dad made custom length stands/spacers for the length we needed. It's worked out really nice with only having to make four stands and everything else being ordered from RCD. I ordered all my stuff though RBS Superchargers and they were super good dudes and really understood what I was trying to do. It's hard these days calling these companies and trying to get them to think outside of the box.

Glad to hear you had the help, and were able to get the point across, but I must say we have been feeling deprived of updates on this killer 6d6 Fairlane... or at least I have ...please keep us posted on the progress ! Twisted Evil

thanks, Dad has been plugging away at it. Rear suspension and front are complete at this point. The rear-end has been put into a cook tank and is now in primer. He has been working getting the JD2 bender on a stand and the hydraulic pump setup so we can start bending up the roll cage. The bender is now ready to do its thing. We have the lower crank support complete at this point. I have contacted Kieth about making the upper support that will mount off the top of the front plate bolt to the bottom of the blower snout via the belt guard. We are working on making up the template now to send over to Keith aka wheelie 58.

This is the custom belt guard. The bottom two ears will be where the support will bolt to.

Looks good. I went on RCD's website and found a front bearing support plate listed for a 429
( 202028-08 BRG SUPPORT PLATE 429 FORD W/ PAN RAILS ) would this not have worked in your application ?
Reason I'm asking is because I'm going back n forth between a nitrous or supercharger upgrade to my existing engine.

In talking with RBS the stand that is currently bolting to my front plate, it would normally bolt to block. I'm going off of memory that's pretty weak, but i believe it would not clear my timing pointer that i have. The stands i'm using against the front plate are for the BBC and i have switched them from left to right. Another factor was they had a BBC unit on the shelf and they could measure it over the phone, whereas the BBF one they did not. I'm not sure if the front plate of the crank support bearing mounts is any different on the BBF unit. I don't see a reason why the BBF unit wouldn't work if you have a smaller front plate and have access to the block for mounting.

This is one of the reasons I may get a 429 truck crank and run the large snout, in case I ever put my 6-71 on it.

If you step up to a billet crank they are ussually chevy snouted for this reason. The ford crank only has a 1.375 snout vs 1.600 for the chevy. If you have a ATI dampner you can just swap out the hub . As far as the timing belt assembly you can get it with a lower hub for the chevy snout from Danny Bee.

BBF crank support on Roots setup Empty Another venue

Hi Guys,

If a fellow wanted a setup fairly trouble free crankshaft bearing support, and needed a camshaft belt drive system...too.
Innovators West makes a BBF belt drive setup that has BBC motor plate hole locations. All one would need to do is to work out the bearing size differences and standoff lengths. The BBC crank bearing support should bolt right up to the belt drive.
Just a thought.....

BBF crank support on Roots setup Empty Blower snout

Post  blown473 January 18th 2018, 1:07 pm

I've run both a 8-71 blown 460 and a 8-71 blown 521 for the last 15 years and never had any issues with the crank, front main or anything. I only run a single belt off the crank behind the blower drive, and I have the hatchet weight and crank spacer from Hampton Blowers after that as well. I think over tightening the belt is what causes most issues,it must have a little slack as it tightens up when hot. I just think the issue is over blown when you look at all the different engines out there running superchargers, non Ford's with crank snouts no bigger than a standard 460, and even FE Ford's or SBF's, I have a friend with a 302 & 6-71,same deal no issues.
