BPO Powerglide

Post  racerk_2000 on Wed 27 Jan 2010 - 2:28

Does anyone know what gear ratio a Buick Pontiac Olds powerglide would be? I have located one and if I was going to use it I would have to cut the Bellhousing off anyway. Does it follow the same rules as the chevy glide, 6 cyl is probably a 1.82 and v8 most likely being a 1.76?

You should put in a straight cut set if you going to put it behind a BBF Very Happy lol!

All pg are 1.76 1.82 1.96 mail jeep but there are tons of aftermarket sets .I twisted a tci superset at the
splines with a mild 530 spend the money and go 1.80 straight cut and never have a problem .
i have tried different low gears never could notice a difference between a 1.76 and 1.96 sorry but my
expierence ?

The OEM type 1.76 will handle a 700hp engine fine, infact they can handle a bunch more as long as they are in unabused condition or new.

All are 1.82 or 1.76. A 1.96 set never came OEM in any Glide, ever. There are a couple ways to determine what gearset is in an OEM Glide. You can measure output shaft diameter, or snug up the band and then rotate the input shaft and see how many turns it takes to move the output shaft one turn. The 1.82 sets are fine for mild performance applications but I'd never really recommend them for anything making real power or using a transbrake. The 1.76 sets will withstand decent power. Usually I advise they'll take 750-ish or a bit more. The gears themselves will usually fail first. I've also seen output shafts snap off the flange. The 1.80 sets are a good choice for strength and cost is reasonable at well under $800. The ones I have at that price area also have a good warranty if the highly unlikely occurs.

I have a couple goofy looking gear sets i thought were from a mail jeep and they were 1.96??
I guess i should have looked at the ratio before believing what i was told .They sure dont look
strong.

Most likely they're 1.82 sets if in a stamped carrier. Wink

Only other weird Glide sets out there are some coarse spline ones from trucks and they had a shorter tailshaft/tailhousing than normal. And I wish I could find the pics I have of some others that must have 3' long tailshafts, lol. They have some laying around at BTE and are not sure what they came in originally. Very strange gearsets!

The helical 9310 steel gearsets were all that you used to be able to get. Then they came out with the Vasco helicals. Then the 9310 straight cut sets. And some Vasco stuff too. The helical Super Sets will stand up to a reasonable amount of power. The only bad thing is that they use a smaller gear size to attain that ratio. I'd say for maybe a light car up to 2500 lbs or so they'd handle quite a bit of power. More weight makes them a bit marginal. But, they should handle 800 or so. Anymore the straight cut sets are the best way to go though.

I understand. It was in a transmission that I gave away because someone wanted a stock case. We bought it as a backup to run them in a s/g car, but now all my stuff is short. Maybe someone on here needs a good set for a light car. Thanks Steve.
