How much fuel to flow?

Post  torkair on February 8th 2010, 12:41 pm

I am looking into electric fuel pumps to feed my 460 build. Carb will be a 1050 dommy and max RPMs will be 7000. Not too sure on the GPH needed to feed something like this but I'm betting that it's gonna be up there.

Well, It's according how you look at it imo. Lots of Racers go overboard on Fuel pumps. It has alot to do w/build. My Maverick ran 9.80's w/472. I shifted at 68 and it crossed line at 7. Roller cam,14.1 comp,4.30 gears. Holley Blue pump (110 gph). Never had a problem. But, a 557 would probably need a (140gph).IMO Smile

cell location and plumbing need to be figured in the equation as well.

too big of pump doesn't hurt a motor....... too little and Lean it out...... different story. You need fuel to make power.

Also the bigger the line the more pump you need as gravity pulls the fuel back when you are going down track.
If you run alky whole different ball game on pumps.

I ran a malloy 140 on my 557 863 hp 5.60's 3000 lb. But it's got a big free flowing filter and sweeping free flowing fittings

I was told by a local late model dirt track guy to run 1/2 fuel line, and test it by free flow. If it will fill a gallon jug in 15 seconds or less you should have enough fuel!, if not you need more volume! just what I was told, just a rule of thumb place to start I guess! Good luck! Smile

I was thinking of running 1/2" braided line from the pump to the carb. I was also thinking of mounting the pump on the frame a few inches forward of the sending unit on the tank that way I have some wiggle room to install a filter in-line before the pump. Also any thoughts on pressure regulators or ways to protect the pump and filter from various road debris while driving to or from the track?

That's what I'm trying to figure out at this point. My brother needed a 110gph mechanical pump to feed his 302 (before it died of course, lol). It kept sucking the float bowls of the 650 speed demon dry until he upgraded to the 110. This 460 is gonna want a heck of alot more fuel than that puny little 302 could ever burn!
