Fel Pro Intake Gaskets
I know this has been hashed over on the other board, but I figured I'd post a pic. I tear the engine partially apart every year, and this will be the last set of fel pro intakes I'll use. Last years set looked about the same. Time to try a different brand I guess.

Jered I think you have something wrong check your head surface with a strait edge and then double check your intake flange, that gasket looks like it is crushed excessively, making me think you have a straitness issue, and another thing is those are 3/8 bolts they only have like #25 to 30 psi torque.... and thats not very much..... Most people over torque the intakes and valve covers by a bunch....

Hey Coug, I had thought of that. I always tighten them in sequence, in steps, and to proper torque. I'm kind of(read really) obsessive compulsive, so I always end up quintuple checking them. The center four bolts always seem to need a little extra twist each time before reaching the full torque value. Perhaps I should just torque them once, walk away, and then seek some therapy for my ocd.

Re: Fel Pro Intake Gaskets
Jered I have used FelPro's and FMS and never had a problem one,,, I have even reused them several times and sealed perfectly......
but I also NEVER use end gaskets they Automaticly go to the Trash and use Silicon on the end.....
I would still double check in just in case...

Re: Fel Pro Intake Gaskets
The other head looks exactly the same. I machined .020 off both sides of the intake during initial assembly, so that's straight. Could both heads be warped on the intake side? These heads are not a matched pair either, meaning they came from two different donor engines.

Use felpro 1231S-3 it has a steel core and very reliable. I checked the part number today and it is correct.

These type FelPro intake gaskets are crap. I've had numerous of these do this very thing on both BBC and BBF. I've even had to waranty these gaskets on three BBC marine engines. I do not use them anymore for anything that will be assembled for more than a season.

Call Fel-Pro and they will tell you that their race gaskets are meant to be temporary unless you get their offerings with metal sandwiched in them.
I use the Mr. Gasket intake gaskets; the regular ones not the Ultra Seal versions.

I guess that's as good an excuse as any, and I've heard. So my next question is... Why are they offered in all Felpro marine gasket sets I get a hold of? Performance or not. Don't bother trying to contact FelPro about it because their company makes no sub-standard gaskets.
On another note I think their head gaskets are very good.
I have not settled on any one gasket but, I do like the Mr Gasket Ultras, and am always looking for better. I've heard good things about Victor's intake gaskets, but I have not got a good source for them.

I've used the felpro 1231s-3 in 3 different mud race engines and when it was time to freshin I swear you could have reused the intake gaskets. Plain 1231's are junk IMO.

Re: Fel Pro Intake Gaskets
I know the 1230/1231's have a bad rap. But I have had very good luck with them. I use adhesive (not RTV) on the gasket to hold it onto the head. Then the secret is to not overtighten the intake bolts.
I have had them look like brand new after two years of street/strip use.
