Re: crank pilot delemma
...you live in Plymouth MI... and you cant find a used 460 crank? this is the motor city... there are TONS of junk yards in Detroit, some are "you pick", others you can buy the specific parts from the counter... every time I go to the you picks (like parts galore on 8 mile n hoover or livernois & warren) I see several late 70s fords/merc/lincolns with 460s in them, that would make great cores to do a rebuild off...
I also see 460s for sale all over craigs list.

I finally found a stock 460 crank, does anyone know what the crank pilot would be on it?

crank pilot size.
Gotta measure it, Dude. You got calipers or a snap gauge?fordman460 wrote:Nope. But check your crank for both. It could have both 1.85 and 1.35 or 1.25. 1.25 is not a factory converter size.

No, but I have the biggest micrometer they make. It goes to 3 inches, its the biggest I've seen. But I can take it to my machinists shop as he has the tools, I'm actually getting the crank through his friend. How could it be both? Inside and outside diameters, is that what your talking about?
Thanks
Thanks

Calipers.
The two different sizes are also different depths. 1.85 is shallow and the 1.35 is deeper. There are cranks with both 1.85 and 1.35. Also cranks with 1.85 and 1.25. The 1.25 is not a "true" pilot size but some companies sell converters for it.
By the way, outside mics get pretty darn big. I have a set up to 6" and I have seen one for 24"!
I hope you aren't pulling my leg with the biggest I've seen statement. Just trying to help!

Tisk tisk tisk, Eagle cranks are crap. You shouldn't use it since the stock crank is much better.

Re: crank pilot delemma
as long as it has been checked out and made sure it is right run the crap out of it..... Most of the problems with them are the bigger cranks the bore hole in the rod throws are ...... hmmmm thin from the inside to the bearing surface.... and have them checked to make sure the journals are round. I see no problem with the rods. I would run it if you have it allready together....
We were just trying to save you time and money cuz the Stock Crank is major strong.... I have a stock Crank stroked to 4" and been turning it 7400 for years and not a single problem, looks like new last time I saw it.....

You guys are probably getting tired of my endless pit of questions. But, did you mean run the crap out of the stock or eagle crank if it checks out okay? And how do you stoke a stock crank? Never heard of that.

You offset grind the rod journals to BB Chevy dimensions. Been done for years and it works. We ran a 4.150" offset ground stock crank for several years, with zero issues. Used to be the cheap way to get more displacement before the aftermarket cranks became available.

Wouldn't that make the journals really small and weak? Wait, I get it now, but I question how strong they would be. But they can't be too weak if your turning 7200 rpm's.

Not really. The rod journals are at 2.500" stock and by offset grinding can go to 2.200" with plenty of beef left. We were making 950 hp out of our A460 headed 514" combo, no issues as I said. This is why we are all stressing the stock crank, it's a great piece with a lot of potential.
