AOD behind a big block

Post  Maddmattmustangs on March 5th 2010, 10:42 am

anyone know what would be involved with this?
theres a guy i found around where i live that builds transmissions on the side at his general auto repair shop that builds AOD's to hold well over 800 hp and i was wondering if anyone has ever seen a regular AOD behind a 460?

im seriously considering this for my car as i currently have a only 3 gears and would love to have an overdrive transmission.

My shifter is a B&M rachet shift for C-4/AOD transmissions so im good there cheers

its not much larger than a C-4 either because i got to see them stacked side by side Cool

i'd say you can build an AOD stronger than a C4, but you'll spend a bit more $$$ for it. I bought mine used but fresh for $1400 (was behind a 950hp turbo small block) and it cost about $600 for the bellhousing w/install. Converter will be another good chunk of $, because I'm not going to skimp there.

Use of an AOD requires using some sort of adapter to fit behind a 385 engine. The e40d is a bolt on. Heres a link for adapters http://transmissionadapters.com/ Very Happy

The general consensus is that's a bad way to adapt an AOD, for several reasons. The best way I've researched is the JW Bell (marketed by some tranny builders as their own ...Lentech for example). Here's pics of that very JW Bell on my AOD - which is not in the car yet.

contact Dan at Silver Fox Transmissions www.silverfoxtrans.com he's significantly cheaper than Lentech or the like.

He runs www.clickclickracing.com which is a site dedicated to AOD's mostly a wealth of knowledge on the topic and lots of tech reading to be done there to educate.

He's in Missouri so you're neighbors. Good luck.
