Build you a mold Bobby you can do it Very Happy Just build the car out of carbon fiber instead Very Happy

Yea, I like that site. It's been a great site for getting 'glass/plug/mold ideas.

Only problem with using carbon fiber vs 'glass is the carbon really needs to be vacuum bagged for best results. And that can be a real chore on complicated mold shapes like the main body shell, or a one piece nose. Smaller "flat" stuff like the hood, trunk lid, & outer door skins are much easier to vacuum.

I guess the main reason for the vacuum bagging is to get the lightest part possible by getting rid of he excess resin ? I am sure it confirms to the mold better , but something complex as a car body would be hard to do.

Yes it is. Even Mr. Bohica would approve. Wink

Yes, vacuum bagging helps remove excess resin for lighter parts. And bagging also helps remove more trapped/hidden air bubbles that you might miss by hand with a brush or roller.

From what I understand the vacuum part helps spread the minumum amount of resin through the carbonfiber. Supposedly if you put to much resin the part will be too brittle. Then your suppose to bake the part while under vacuum. I watched a show on how they produced the parts for $$ racing. It seemd amazing how little resin they used, then when they put it under vacuum it just did spread through out the part!

I guess this is if you are using it for structural design and need it as lite as posable.

If I remember correctly not all carbon fiber needs to be cooked in an oven. One deciding factor is the type of resin used. Pre-preg carbon fiber (carbon fiber cloth that comes pre-coated with resin) is one type that has to be cooked in an oven. The heat makes all the coated rubber(ish) like carbon/resin layers flow together & it also catalyzes/activates the resin coating so it will harden. I don't think you have to "cook" something like the lower priced "carbon" wheel tubs & interior pannels (that are really a mix of both carbon fiber & fiberglass layers to help keep the cost down) because I think they use a resin (that you add a catalist to) that is compatible with both materials.
