with a stock pan it is tough but I would recommend a good rubber gasket. If you use a cork gasket you can use some silicone but make sure it is almost dry before you put it together.

use weatherstrip glue on both sides of the gasket and you will not have any leaks, just hope you dont want it off again.

I cut most of the handle off a 1/4" rachet that I found on the road. My poor mans torque wrench.
Keeps me from the over torque that I tend to do.

What about an aftermarket deep aluminum pan?

Keeping them from leaking? Cork gaskets work fine dry. Just torque lightly and even all the way around. I don't know exact torque settings but snug is usually good. If not then you can go with a rubber gasket and torque a little more.

Ok guys, thanks for the replies. I went ahead and did it before you guys replied. But heres how I did it. I dropped the pan, changed the filter, I bought some of the silicone made for transsmissions. Tranny fluid isnt supposed to eat it.I cleaned the pan really good. The pan was in real good shape.I put a real thin coat of the silly cone on the pan then stuck the cork gasket to it, then I put another real thin coat on the gasket. Then I put the pan with a few bolts just lightly snug, waited a few hours for the silly cone to set up then installed the rest of the bolts and just lightly torqued them with a 1/4" ratchet. We'll see what happens. I cant seem to ever istall one without leaks.
I really want to get an aftermarket pan but I needed to get this done.

Re: Trans pan gasket
I like to use studs on the trans pan also, it makes for easier alinement and never have to worry about pan gasket slippage, then I use Poly locks nuts on the studs...with a small washer.....

Farpak or Accopac gaskets are the schizzle. Put them on dry, or with a light coat of Transgel assembly lube on each side so they come apart easier. Torque pan bolts to roughly 95 in/lbs with an accurate torque wrench.

Well fired up the car today and took it for a spin. Got back to the garage and its leaking on the pass. side a little. I snugged up the bolts a hair and we'll see. I'm done with this stock pan I'm ordering an aluminum one.I was looking at the Moroso fabricated alum. pan. Anyone use this or should I just get a cast pan. Do they really help.I know they help strengthen the case. Do they make it easier to keep the pan from leaking.
Seems like theres never enough time to do it right but always time to do it again. I guess I was just itchin to get the car running.

What trans do you have? If it's a Glide I carry the fabbed Stef's pans in stock. They're a nice piece.
