c4 or toploader?

Post  new2460 on May 17th 2010, 12:30 am

i have a 1964 galaxie that i'm putting a 460 in. it will be mostly street driving but it will go to the strip for some fun. i have a beefed c6 and also a big in big out toploader. the toploader was built by liberty and has a hemi input shaft. which would you use? i'm leaning towards the 4speed. the c6 has heavy duty bands and clutches w/ a reverse manual valvebody and r servo. thanks

i'm not much for 4speeds but you would'nt be screwen with the stall converter, you'd have a clutch to screw with.4speed could be funer to drive and you'd know you were geten it all to the rear wheels, get'n it to the ground would be the problem. Laughing

C6 will be much easier on parts and to install.

Bracket Racing or Fun Only?

Post  512Fairlane on May 17th 2010, 9:22 pm

If you are planning on getting serious about bracket racing I'd go with the C-6. If you just want to go test and tune and have fun with it I'd go 4-Speed, although as heavy as a it will be you will probably eventually break some parts if you plan to run on slicks and leave hard. I grew up helping my Dad race toploaders behind small blocks. That's why I went with a C-6. Four speeds are fun but if you're serious about racing them plan on spending lots of time on maintenance. Of course Dad never knew how to leave under 7500 RPM either.

If you go toploader, keep a spare input shaft on hand and make sure the rev limiter works..... Idea

After 4 years with the toploader in my Fairlane, I bought a C6 at the Bash this weekend, and will be using that. The 4 speed was great for the street, but for track time, I miss the C6 I originally had in there, but gave to my brother's 47 Ford Truck. I bought one from Richard Talley on this site, and it's a reverse manual valve body, with a transbrake (not sure I'd be using that too much....LOL) He also included a PTC converter, Jasper converter, and some other parts for a great price. I had a hydraulic clutch setup in there, which most likely ran out of adjustment with the short throw of the slave cylinder. It's at the point I can't get it into gear, without shutting off the engine. Laughing

Go with the toploader, have some fun. A 600hp speed shift can't be done with slip 'O' matic. Steve
