Gears for door car?

Post  David Cole on June 23rd 2010, 8:40 pm

I'm going to look at a door car tomorrow. If I were to decide to buy it would come with the gears already installed and my choice of another set.

The car has a 9" with 3.89 gears (it had 615 BBC on spray) in it now. He also has a set of 4.10 and 4.86 that I can choose from. 33" tire. Close to 1000 hp 875-900 torque alky injected bbf. About 2750 lbs w driver. 1/8 mile only.

What would be my best choice on gears?

I agree, if it's 1/8th mile only. I ran a 4.56 in both 1/8th and 1/4 mile, was a nice compromise. The 4.86 was a bit too much for the 1/4 though.... Laughing

i'v tried 4.30's and ran the same e/t,just hurt 60' and made it up on the big end.4.86 will put you at a good rpm for your combo IMO.it's worked best for me anyway and i have a glide & 33"tires too. Smile and about that weight.big tires and no bars!yet, hope the snake jelly will cause me to use them. Laughing

1/8 mile.....no 4.10 for sure.
Look back at the dragster deal........was it 4.30? Same sized tire you may or may not need 4.56 because of the extra wt. of the door car. I.M.O. with 850 or more lbs ft tq. a 4.86 may not be needed.

430

My light car seemed to have liked the 430 gear over the 488. Maybe with the heavier car a 456 might work best.

Most likely I'll go with a 4.29 as it's a large pinion Pro-Gear. No 4.30 Pro-Gear. They make a 4.44 street gear, I wish they made it in a 35 spline large pinion. If they did, I would give it a try.

I gay on another forum had some pics of it in action. The combo was a 615 BBC w two stages of spray. Best of 4.80 @ 148. I want to run 5.20's on motor (so I run both brackets and the 5.30 heads up class). It's still wired and plumbed for the bottle though. So you never know..... Idea

My experience with my '93 was it would mph better with the 4.29, but run quicker and 60' better with the 4.57.(About .02 slower with the 4.29). Having said that, I'm going with the 4.29 gear in my new car, at least to start.
