Re: NEED ADVICE ON 472 MOTOR
Whats done to the heads? do you have actual flows? What intake and Carb? What Ignition? What Convertor?
Need more Specs on the cam.
9's isn't an issue at total weight of 2600# with Dove heads and 472 inches.
Also please turn off the Caps, Thanks

Some will disagree but I think you have way too much tire to turn w/466. are you going to run 1/8 or 1/4.The gear for that combo imo would be a 4.30 w/29.5 to 31.5 tall tire. If you have flat tops that can be cut for valve reliefs I would go w/p-51 and if not probably the TFS street for a bolton head. Alot of things to consider. IMO, I would go buy a solid roller for the valve train.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON 472 MOTOR
rereading the listed spec, I think the issue is in the convertor and the cam.
The heads castings are well capible of 9's providing they have the proper work done to them, but if they are stock your spitting in the wind.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON 472 MOTOR
IVE NOT HAD THE HEADS OFF TO SEE IF THEY HAVE BEEN WORKED ANY,THEY MAY HAVE SOME WORK ,BUT I DOUBT ALOT,I FEEL THE TIRES ARE BIG ALSO,BUT THIS IS A TUBED CAR AND THEY ARE NEW , CAME WITH CAR ,IF I HAD BOUGHT THEM THEY WOUYLD BE 14/32S ,I WAS THINKING A 4.86 OR 5.13 FOR IT ,AND A 4500 STALL,WOULD GIVE ME AT LEAST 4 TENTHS,AND SOME MORE TUNING DEF WOULD HELP,IT HAS ZERO THROTTLE RESPONSE,I ADDED A 1/2 LINE SETUP AND A 280 PUMP,IT HAD A 5/16 LINE ,WITH A SUMMIT 120 PUMP,IM NOT SURE IF ITS WAY RICH OR WAY LEAN,IT HAD A 94 JET IN THE 1050 DOM,FRONT AND REAR, I WENT TO A 89 JET IN BOTH SIDES BUT HAVENT HAD A CHANCE TO TRY IT YET,IT DIDNT SEEM TO GET WARM VERY EASY, SO I THINKING IT WAS WAY RICH,I MADE 3 BACK TO BACK PASSES AND IT NEVER GOT OVER 170 ,I BOUGHT IT THE WAY IT IS ,SO IM STILL PLAYING WITH IT,TO GET IT TUNED,I HAVE 36 DEG. TIMING AT 3500 RPM,HOW DOES THAT SOUND, IT WAS 34 DEG.,THE VALVES ARE SET AT 17 ON BOTH SIDES,I DIDNT GET A CAM CARD WITH IT OR NOTHING ELSE,SO IM KINDA FEELING IT OUT,HAS ANY ONE EVER HEARD OF A 645 LIFT SOLID FLAT TAPPET CAM, IM TRYING TO FIND INFO ON IT,I WAS TOLD IT WAS A FLAT TOP 13 TO1 MOTOR,BUT KAASE SAID IT COULD ONLY BE AST THE MOST 12 TO 1,SO IM SURE I GOT SOME BULL ON THE MOTOR ,HOW IS 10.80S FOR WHAT I GOT ALSO , CAN I CALL ANYONE ID LIKE TO TALK TO A BBF GUY

Re: NEED ADVICE ON 472 MOTOR
#1 you need to know what your heads are and whats been done to them. Pull them and get some one to flow them and look them over. If the are stock you either need to upgrade (to something Aftermarket) or do work to them.
#2 A more up to date custom cam is inline
#3 need to look into a real convertor (after you figure out the heads and cam situtation)
#4 I wouldn't rush in to getting way more gear untill you figure out what you've got and what your going to do with the motor.

You can get it done with the iron heads and flat tappet..............but a set of TFS street heads and a nice roller will make it much easier to get there.

I had a 472 with some streets, very little work on the heads..........just port matched etc, solid roller in the 269/274 @.050, trw dome deal and some h beam rods.............ran 9.60's @ 3150#s......c/4 deal. That was with a Ron's toilet on methanol.....still would have been a 9 sec deal on gas.
Same heads with more work...more cam .......less compression and more stroke..........glide............3000#s..........9.01 best 1/4 and 5.60 best 1/8.
If you could renotch the pistons I'd get the P51 heads........... give you room to grow.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON 472 MOTOR
that what im thinking but it will be this winter unless i get a nice used set,i want to run the 5.70 index it takes a 6teen to make the index,i can run i think with gears and more stall,6.50s,so i need to gain 6 tenths,i figure cam change and better heads ,some tuning i can get there, id be surprized if the heads i have now have any porting,i run 6.90s with a 3500 stall and stock dove heads ,and a 4.10 gear with 33 tall tire how is that good are bad ,and have you heard of a flat tappet cam with 645 lift im trying to figure what cam i have
