Re: Header construction
You have a couple options:
1) I think Burns has some info on it along with some of the other 'higher' end guys.
2) For the actual equations, you can search on speedtalk.com in the advanced tech section.
3) I googled, "calculate header length" and found several calculators such as:
http://www.wallaceracing.com/header_length.php
4) Personally, I purchased Pipemax software for ~$40. It calculates header primary length and several other things. IMHO, it was money well spent.
To muddy the waters a little
:
From what I've read, conventional 4 into 1 headers care more about the collector length and diameter than the actual primary length. Also, there is the argument that all the bends that are normally required to make equal length headers offset much of the power gains because of the decreased flow.
Have a good day!

Re: Header construction
I'll agree with Michael, don't go adding extra pipe elbows to get to the lengths equal. There are lots of variables in header construction to deal with. Make them fit your chassis. When I built my uprights, Tim Murphy at The Fab Shop was a great help. He has great products and advice after the sale. I bought a bunch of bends, collectors and flanges from him. His stuff is comparable in price to the big name brand places and his stuff is top notch.
