429 crank will not fit a D-9 block ???

Post  83-88T-Bird Guy on Tue Oct 05, 2010 7:06 pm

I went to put a 429 crank that John Bozzelle gave me (Thanks John !) into Keith Blackburn's (Copperhead) old 514 crate engine D9 block. I got a big surprise ! That rear oil slinger or whatever it is misses the groove in the D9 block..... Never saw that coming.
I just thought that all 429-460 cranks fit all 68-97 blocks.

Cheap build denied ! Laughing

Yeah and you are also gonna find out if you have that (oil slinger) turned down the crank throws will hit the bottom of the cylinders, a little work with the die grinder and problem solved.

Todd:
Does removing that "oil slinger" hurt anything ? Just curious.

So I take it that a D9 block has to have a 79 or later crank ?

Yeah...I see that now. As cheap as I got the block from Keith, I figured I could at least use it for engine bay mock up and for the production of our new oil pan flange clamps. Very Happy

I have a buddy who did this several years ago we had this same situation and already had the block bored so we turned down the flange and notched the cylinders and the engine is still running. So in my opinion it will work just fine as it does not affect the rear main or thrust.

early crank late block

It has been done before. I had money into boring a block and balancing a bottom end so I clearanced the crank my self in a D9 block. It took all of 1 1/2 hours. Not a big deal if you feel confident you can do it. Paul Kane outlined the process somewhere awhile back.

Yeah, I did the same thing to a D9 block about three years ago. One "expert" (not on this forum) told me that the oil slinger was a must, can't do without it! So, after I laid out the block, and main cap, I painstakingly ground out the relief, and then found out the throws wouldn't clear the bottoms of the cylinders and adjacent areas - so, more grinding! It all worked out fine, and is still running with zero problems ever since. BTW, I found out afterwards from another expert, that I DIDN'T need to retain the oil deflector! Oh well, it was fun - yeah right!
