Super Duty trucks -> can the 6.0 & 6.4 be made reliable?

Post  BigBlockRanger on November 30th 2010, 9:57 pm

Been looking at used SD trucks and was wondering what "fixes" need to be in place for one of them to be considered "ok". Or is there no such thing? lol

The 6.0, well there is the whole head bolt problem and you replace them with ARP bolts then you should be good with THAT problem.

I was told that the evac setup or something like that has dexcool that runs in it. Well its aluminum, dexcool and aluminum equals bad corrosion so you would basically end up pumping coolant right in to your engine. Forgive me if I made a mistake, but something like that happened to a kid here with their dads truck.

You seem to know as much about 6.0/6.4 as you do electric golf carts............... Very Happy

One could "go through" a 6.0 and fix a bunch of the issues............start with a clean slate....approx 7-8k if it aint got serious problems.

The 6.4 deal get rid of the pos DPF, keep an eye on the coolant level (it will leak sooner or later) I'd even go as far as putting a level indicator of some sort on it.........coolant gets low.....egr cooler leaks....eng hydrolocks....bend rod........lots of $$$$$$ to fix.

both...........even if the 6.0 locks it aint no big deal, 6.4.................about the 2 dozen or so that have done it at the shop.....2 didnt need shortblocks afterwards. And the 6.4..............yeah that cabs gonna be off sooner or later.

6.0/6.4 use the gold coolant, not the dexcool. 6.7 uses the "specialty orange"..........ie "dexcool"

Don't know nothing about the 6.0 but here's my take on the 6.4

My 2008 F350 has had the cab off at least 3 times. I'd have to pull an OASIS report to see for sure. It's had a HPFP, HPFP plug/harness, intercooler, radiator, turbo assembly and a DPF all changed under warranty. The truck has 101,000 on it now. I bought it last June with 49K on it. I drive the crap out of it on a daily basis. Overall it's a good truck. I plan to ditch the DPF and cat here soon so it will run better. Engine internal wise I haven't had any issues. It seems that the problems come from the emissions stuff on them. EGR, DPF, cat, etc...

Hey Fabio, Can I run the Rotella ELC "red" coolant in this 6.4? That stuff seems to be better than the Motorcraft Gold.

Any way you know of to completely bypass the EGR system? I know I can buy the plates to block off the exhaust gasses, but is there any way to disconnect the coolant hoses too or completely remove the EGR coolers so as to not worry about them rotting and leaking coolant into the engine? Also, someone told me the EGR is used on these trucks to relieve boost during high boost conditions and that removing it can cause the heads to lift? Any of this sound true?

Now, I put 100K on a 7.3 in just over 3 years. I bought it with 228K on it and bought my 6.4 when it rolled 330K. All that thing has ever had was a transmission, injectors and some various sensors, filters, gaskets, etc... But the truck is just worn out - suspension, body, interior... I still use it to run to the shipyards and boat docks and to haul trash and other dirty work, but it is nowhere as nice as my 2008...

Gotta take the good with the bad I guess...

from what ive heard ....... there is a local guy that buys up these 6.0 with 20-30k (for his fleet)on them the first thing he does is take the cab off , arp bolts , egr delete, new exhaust, air intake and sct programmer and he has these things runnin to 150-200k without a lick of problems and he uses the sct deal with a custom tranny program and mileage deal only ......i wish he would by my deal Laughing

there was a couple of other things he said he does mechanicaly but i cant remember

I put 122K on my 06 6.0....... Only issue was a dirty connector that affected starting..... simple fix with some dielectric grease.........

I did change oil religiously and ran synthetic........and the truck never sat around or did short BS trips.

Looks like I may just keep looking at gas trucks seeing that I do not tow all that often. My neighbor has a F350 crewcab v10 that gets about the same gas mileage as my Durango. lmao I just want something I can haul the kids AND has a normal sized bed on it.
