Turbo ?????
I was sitting here day dreaming wondering how hard and how expensive it would b to turbo my engine
engine
545''
d1ve block
scat 4.5'' cast crank
scat 6.7'' rods
probe 22cc forged pistons
10.8to1 cr
frpp c460 cam from lem
dove heads 2.25 int/1.75 ex some port work no clue on flow
victor intake
QFT 950 e85 carb
holley 110 gph fuel pump
c-6 man rev valve body
ptc 4000 stall
its in a full weight fox on 275's
runs 6.80's now but I want it to run 5.80's keep in mind im day dreaming and trying to learn about turbos!!
My question is
single or twin?
what kind of turbo?
whay kind of carb?
will 2 bolt mains work?
Is 10.8 cr on e85 to much compression

Re: Turbo ?????
To run 5.80's you have lots of options. the compression is a little high but a thick head gasket will probably be enough. any of the major blow-thru carb guys will work (CSU, C&S, Pro-Systems,...) the two bolt will work fine. either a single or twins will work. sizing can be talked about later. we are in a great time when it comes to brands because there are plenty of good companies out there. I would definitively talk to a dealer that sells multiple brands because some of the big name companies are way overpriced for what you get. that's starting to get into the area that I might worry about the crank. of course a lot larger fuel pump and lines. the trans will be fine if it's well built. PTC makes great turbo converters and will help you out.

Re: Turbo ?????
Cool thanks bud
what size single and boost would get me to 5.80
And would the crank hold?

I don't know enough about those cranks to say but I bet some others will chime in on that. You are looking at the 1000hp range. not much boost. I would really hate to guess on the sizing. this combo is uncharted territory for me.

Re: Turbo ?????
I think you would enjoy two 67-80mm turbos. Just have to work with someone to find the proper hot side. I haven't quite figured out how to properly size a turbine.
Two 80mm, S400, Bullseye, turbos on a blow thru setup will make 2,000hp.

Re: Turbo ?????
Well twin 67's would work cause I ain't got the motor or car to handle 2000 lol
Heck 800 hp would probably work for me
I would b happy with low low 6.0
Heck what about somthing like powerstroke turbos do they work like ppl say they do ??

Those are to small for your cubic inches and too restrictive. Remember a diesel engine at wide open throttle is turning less than half the rpm you would see. Then they are already having to push 24-30lbs to make what little power they can. Plus the drive pressures on the turbine side would be extreme.
If you understand how many lb/min of air your engine use NA then you can figure out how many more lb/min you will need to make a given hp. The turbos have to be able to produce atleast the same amount of lb/min as your engine would ingest NA. Or else it would be like breathing through a straw.
Then remember what comes in must come out! (get into turbine sizing) Like trying to fart through a straw! LoL To small too much pressure. To large, not enough to drive the turbine.

Re: Turbo ?????
Now that's how you explain something to a newb makes perfect sense lol
I didn't really believe that diesel turbos would work that's just what I was told
I will probably put a 150 shot on it for now run it a while then when I freshen it up go forged crank, 4 bolt mains and cut a Lil more dish in my pistons then turbo so I won't have to worry about failure
I'm just in the learning process right now

Re: Turbo ?????
Here is a quick little tid bit of info. At 6000rpm your 545cu using a VE of 85% ingest 804 cfm of air. Your heads would probably be more like 80%VE (4000 @ 80% is 505cfm, 5000 @ 80% is 631cfm, 6000 @ 80% is 757cfm, 7000 @ 80% is 883cfm) This is just ruff information that you would need to size a turbo. Once you put the engine on a dyno you can adjust. You can findout exactly how efficant your engine is.
Remember boost PSI is only the amout of restriction the turbo is having work to push air through the engine.
Engine Airflow Requirements
CID x Max RPM รท 3456
545 6000 3270000 946 (if your engine was 100% efficient)
Volumetric Efficiency Estimate Adjustment
Airflow VE % (efficiency of your engine)
946 85% 804 CFM
Pressure Ratio
Desired Boost (PSI)
15 1.03421355 2.03421355 (calculated from your VE and desired inefficency)

Just an idea if you applied 10psi to the 545cu

Re: Turbo ?????
Cool I don't think my engine will handle that
I wish I wouldve put forged crank and 4 bolt mains in this thing o well
