MPG Head service. has a moter mount and header kit . they may have a kit to notch out your shock towers, our do it yourself . i have a 1969 cougar w a 460, with out modified towers but would recomend it for sure. but it will fit ! when i did mine about 20 years ago no kits were avail. that i new of. I mocked up the moter , and modified a set of 1971 mustang 429 headers from Hooker , then built my own moter mout towers to fit the stock 429 mounts. hop that helps

Re: 70 mustang coupe 460 swap
I read all the horror stories and saw the pictures of no clearance on the sides header, spark plugs and head bolt access. I had a mustang II front suspension installed that eliminated the shock towers and gave me rack n pinion steering.
It will fit but as cool40 said.....you will be cussing.

ps... we need pics

Re: 70 mustang coupe 460 swap
Fabio has built his 69 with a strut frontend and i think it still has stock frame rails.i used fox mustang stuff on my first build but it was all tube chassis deal.i always thought the fox stuff would work good and loose the spring tower.my headers were a PIA! use a hex head socket and wrench to get the plugs loose and fuel hose to get them out/in.i even ran the power brakes for a while but the tall v/c would'nt fit.

Re: 70 mustang coupe 460 swap
I am at about the same HP that you are looking for . i have welded in subframe conectors, and have caltrack traction bars and split leaf springs . adjustable drag shocks front and rear , bigblock coils in front . no roll cage yet so it wasnt legal to run... LOL... but ,it has ran 11.29 @119 and 1.54 60ft on m/t drag radials at Phoenix AZ. 1200ft elevation. may have a 11.0 or 10.90s in it w/ slicks and a little more tune ? its still a street car at heart but, drag and show car to . i think Crites has kits to for these cars ???Tristatev8 wrote:Fatcat... A few things
I just did this swap in a 70 xr7 (same components). I used crites motor mounts, transmission mounts, and headers. For an oil pan I used a front sump milodon kit that came with pan, windage tray, and pickup ( there are two styles of oil pumps for the 460 and cant remember which one works with the pickup). You wont be able to use just any water pump, there is a standard and short one. I believe the short one is off of early thunderbird 429's (you will need a short pump if you want to run a mechanical fan). Alternativly, I used a standard pump with no fan then got an aluminum radiator with dual 12" electric fans and it all clears by about 1/8" (champion radiators come with the electric fans for under $300). Other than that its just a tight squeeze. If I had the money I would have done the mustang II suspension or notched the towers.

I did this deal once w/Tubular Automotive headers and home made mounts. If I do it again I will use a front engine plate.

460 / 70 Fastback
I am currently putting together a 466 for my 70 Mustang fastback. I purchased AJE tubular front suspension and plan on notching the shock towers. Hopefully I will be able to document my progress here.

Struts
If you want to keep the factory look of the shock towers I'd recommend at least getting rid of the upper a-arms and going with either an AJE strut front or a Classic Mustang set up. We just did the conversion on my 64 Fairlane. Since they don't make kits for Fairlanes we did it ourselves using Fox Mustang struts and an Escort rack. It made a lot more room than when we just had notched towers with upper a-arms. If its an all out race car put a whole front clip on it but if you like the Super stock look try something like this. We picked up some power by rebuildling the headers so they can exit straight out of the port. Here's the build.
