Stripped head bolt hole Empty Stripped head bolt hole

Post  OldRedFord November 30th 2009, 3:49 am

A while back I stripped out a head bolt hole on my 460. Havent fixed it yet. Just thinking about running a tap in the hole to clean the threads and call it done.

What do you think?

When you say stripped do you mean you overtorqued it and it started to pull all of the threads out of the block???

From the pics it looks like maybe just the top couple threads are missing...

If just the top couple are damaged and it feels solid when you torque it then it should be ok.

If all of them were comprimised by overtorquing then I would be thinking about a heli coil or a new block...

I had one stripped one in one of my D1 blocks. I bought a tap set. I think they are 9/16.It was about $100 for the Tap,drill bit and the Heli coil. I will send the kit to you if you promise I get it back. Smile

Do NOT Helicoil it use a Keensert it is much better deal it is steel threaded not just a coil in it, I have seen the Heli coils pull and come out regularly.... from the pic's I would run a tap down it and see if it cleans it up first.

Its only that hole and I did it by putting a short head bolt in where a long bolt should have gone.

Try a tap first. If it's pulled enough to need fixing, use a Keensert or a Timesert. I've used these on the wet head bolts in the late model smallblocks to make them dry holes

Here is a keensert, once it is in, you drive the 4 stakes down and it locks it in place so it would back out when you unscrew the bolt, as Randy had mentioned.
