Need a starter that you have personnel experience with in this application.
1974 F100 390 long tube headers c6 transmission factory air , power steering, power disc brakes.
Using Hooker headers bought new for this application.
Stock starter workers but fits firmly against the header tubes and gets heat soaked . Starters are like everything else on a vehicle . They don't last long in extreme heat ! Tired of pulling headers cutting lose exhaust raising engine to replace a starter.
Keeping the headers . Thanks Whitefield

Any of the mini-starters should work. On that note, I have used the Summit brand starters with great results. You can rotate and clock them to gain the clearance you need, and they are not so darn heavy either!!

The starters won't work I should say don't fit . They either hit the block or the header

Well, I see. Because the starters are offset, it causes a problem. And a stock type is in contact with the header also, which tells me that the header is made wrong, or at least they didn't utilize the available space as efficiently as they should have.

For a problem like that, I’d cut & fix the damn headers....not that big of a deal to cut & splice a primary tube. Then you can run any starter you like, not heat soak it, and swap it without yanking the headers. All problems solved with just a little fab work.

If you're willing to pay for the best starter on the market, then go and buy a Mezeire. You can clock it in any direction and is outstanding quality.

Re: What starter are you guys using ?
If it uses a 3 bolt starter then I have used the one with planetary gear reduction which keeps the main body in the same location as the stock starter with a small solenoid on the top... I don't know where my customer got it though.
It was in a box with "Gladiator" markings on it.

» Starter wiring , with solinoid on starter and fender
» Starter for 460
» starter wont disengage!!!
» What to use for starter?
» You better look
