Professional engine builders
My customer had an engine built here local, a 460 block , scat crank, lpc, rods race tech pistons , afr heads and so on, had a leak on dyno(engine only has dyno time) told him we could put a new gasket on it, noticed oil was really dark, I was thinking assembly lube, but then I noticed a pieces of metal on magnetic plug, maybe a casting? I also noticed the oil has a little sparkle to it, not much, but enough to notice it, is this normal or something to be concerned with?

What kind of camshaft? Flat tappet cam, or roller? Is the engine ticking, knocking, missing?

Sounds about right ...

Cut filter apart, there's metal in filter, customer spoke with builder said the film is probably from all the assembly lube and if there was metal I the filter bring it back but hes had it happen before and took it all back apart and found nothing wrong, best I can tell it looks like little pieces of shavings, like it was not cleaned well maybe, doesnt sound promising to me

I would think it's not normal to have pieces of metal in a new engine if it was cleaned and built correctly.

Re: Professional engine builders
A new engine might have what appears like glitter in the oild from anti seize and new components breaking in, but I would not expect anything of any size. I would definitely look at the bearings and the valves as well.....especially since it is not in the car.
That is seriously dark oil.

Re: Professional engine builders
The gray coating on the bottom of the pan is assembly lube. I used a full bottle of "L" brand lube to put together a Boss 302. Upon start up the main seal leaked so with about 5 minutes on it , I pulled the pan and found the same gooey layer on the bottom of the pan. I asked a friend who is a chemist in the oil industry and he said "Yes the oil will only hold so much of that moly/zinc/phospherous in suspension before it falls out and lays on the floor of the pan" . He went on a rant about additives after that. I greatly reduced the amount of assembly lube I use now because of it.

I would pull it all apart and inspect everything! Check the gear on the distributor. Is it the correct type?

Re: Professional engine builders
You are going to get some black and sparkly stuff from the cylinder walls and rings breaking in its normal, you shouldn't have big flakes or chuncks in it.
