Converter flex plate bolts Empty Converter flex plate bolts

Post  Dave De February 23rd 2022, 11:22 pm

I've had two converters have the 7/16-20 threads get damaged over time to where a nut has to be added on the back side. I'm thinking about drilling and tapping for a solid insert or just drilling a clearance hole for a 7/16' bolt. Maybe I'm using the wrong bolt? I've been using a standard grade 8 hex head.
Suggestions?
Thanks

The ones I've seen with that size bolts are the 7/16-20 UNF .  Not enough meat there to helicoil as a repair ?

There is but wouldnt a solid insert be better? McMaster has them with a 9/16-12 thread.

Or tack weld a nut on the back side.
Or drill out and use a lock nut on the back side.

Never done these but the easiest is to tack a nut to the back side.

The Helicoil will give an ok repair and unlikely to give any issues . I use them a lot to save taking out a lot of material. A 9/16-12 is a big thread . But if a nut can be tacked on then run it Smile
What about an insert to get the threads back to 3/8-24 UNF like they should be originally ? Never figured out why some see the need for 7/16"

The flex plate has tight clearance holes for 7/16" thread. If 3/8" bolts were used the flex plate would not be happy with the sloppy fit in the hole.
